I was recently asked how to get to know someone you are guardian for. The context was that I become guardian for strangers and I was sharing that family is best because an attorney or bank will never know your loved one the way that you do.

Unfortunately, there are times when family cannot serve as guardian and my encouragement is to think about caregivers that will get to know your loved one.

So, then I was asked: how do you get to know someone that you’re now a guardian for.

I can’t answer for everyone, but for me and Forest, it’s about including them in everything that we’re doing.

Church.
The Zoo.
Christmas.
Birthday parties.

It’s about becoming friends.

When you decide to become friends with someone, you naturally learn about them.

Likes.
Dislikes.

You must invest the time.

There is no power differential.

“Let them tag along” - that’s the motto

Even if it means you walk slower.
Even if it means the errands take longer.
Even if it means you keep lugging a wheelchair in and out of your car.
Even if ___________.

It’s not always convenient, but it’s always necessary.
