Some things are better left in the past. Your name might be one of them.

Whether it's returning to a former name after divorce, choosing a name that better reflects your identity, changing a child's name or simply making a change that's meaningful to you, a name can carry a lot of significance.

And while the decision may be deeply personal, the legal process doesn't have to be something you figure out on your own.

McGill Law helps individuals and families with legal name changes in Nebraska and Iowa, including preparing the necessary paperwork and guiding clients through the court process.

After all, there's no reason to let an old name haunt you forever.

As part of Domestic Violence Awareness Month, we're taking a closer look at some of the forms abuse can take, including those that are less visible or harder to recognize.

One we encounter frequently in family law is financial abuse.

Financial abuse doesn't always mean someone is taking your money. Sometimes, it means making sure you never have control over it in the first place.

A partner who insists on managing every account. Someone who demands receipts for everyday purchases but refuses to share financial information. A spouse who prevents the other from working, accumulates debt in their name or threatens to leave them with nothing if they try to leave.

These behaviors can develop gradually, sometimes over years, until one person has little access to money, financial information or the resources to make decisions independently.

In family law, we see how financial abuse can complicate divorce, custody arrangements and the ability to establish an independent household. And the effects don't necessarily end when a relationship does.

Financial abuse is domestic abuse.

Recognizing it matters, particularly when someone is considering leaving a relationship but fears they cannot afford to do so.

If financial control is affecting your relationship or your ability to leave safely, speaking with an attorney can help you understand your legal rights, what financial information may be available to you and what options you have.

Love shouldn't cost you your independence, your security or your ability to make decisions about your own life.

October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month.

We have seen a noticeable increase in people coming to us with concerns about domestic violence, coercive control, threats, safety and financial abuse.

Abuse does not always look the way people expect it to. It may be physical, but it can also involve intimidation, isolation, control, threats, monitoring or restricting access to money.
Financial abuse, in particular, is something we see often in family law.

At the same time, many of the local organizations supporting survivors are stretched thin. That can make an already difficult situation even harder for someone trying to figure out what to do next.

Throughout October, we will be sharing more information about domestic violence and the legal and community resources available in Nebraska, including financial abuse, protection orders, mandatory reporting and local support services.

For Omaha, the Women's Center for Advancement has a 24 hour hotline at 402-345-7273 and provides free, confidential services for people experiencing domestic violence, sexual assault, stalking and human trafficking.

For Lincoln, Friendship Home of Lincoln provides domestic violence crisis services, emergency shelter and longer term housing support. Its 24 hour crisis line is 402-437-9302.

For Council Bluffs and southwest Iowa, Catholic Charities, Des Moines Diocese's Domestic Violence & Sexual Assault Program provides free, confidential services, including emergency shelter, advocacy and support. Its 24-hour crisis line is 712-328-0266 or 888-612-0266.

The Nebraska Coalition To End Sexual And Domestic Violence can also connect people with services throughout the state.

We will include additional resource information in the first comment below.

Leaving, making a safety plan or simply beginning to understand the options can take time. There are people ready to help, and there are legal options available.

If domestic violence is affecting a divorce, custody matter or family situation, our attorneys can help explain what options may be available and what steps may help protect the people involved.

If you are in immediate danger, call 911.

“When no one looks like you, it can feel like you are not welcome or that you do not belong.”

In “A Latina in the Law: A Brief Retrospective,” Senior Associate Attorney Ashley Palma, Esq. writes about entering the legal profession as a Latina, often being the only person of color in the courtroom, and how those experiences have shaped the attorney she is today.

For Ashley, representation is about more than who is standing beside you in the courtroom. It is also about whether the person sitting across from her feels respected enough to tell the truth about their life, ask questions without embarrassment and trust that they will be taken seriously.

We’re sharing Ashley’s perspective during Hispanic Heritage Month and encourage you to read the full piece.

A little friendly competition, a lot of laughs and a Tuesday afternoon together.

This week, our team stepped away from the office for an afternoon at Topgolf. It was a chance to spend time together outside of work, have some fun and enjoy each other’s company.

We believe taking care of our team matters. When people feel supported, appreciated and connected to one another, they do better work and bring more of themselves to the people we serve.

And yes, we discovered we have a few golfers among us. A few others were mostly there for the food and company. Both approaches were fully supported.

Taking time to enjoy each other outside the office is part of how we build a team that works well together and shows up well for the people we serve.

Yesterday was CIRA Center for Immigrant and Refugee Advancement's Welcome Fest, and we were proud to sponsor this celebration of the people and cultures that make Omaha home.

The afternoon was full of incredible food, music, dancing, art, local makers and community organizations, with people from across Omaha coming together for Welcoming Week.

We believe immigrants and refugees make Nebraska stronger. Their cultures, traditions, businesses, families and stories are part of the fabric of our communities, and they deserve to be welcomed, supported and valued.

McGill Law, PC, LLO founder Jodie McGill serves on CIRA’s Board of Directors, and supporting CIRA’s work with immigrant and refugee families across Nebraska means a great deal to our firm.

Thank you to CIRA Center for Immigrant and Refugee Advancement for creating an afternoon that brought so many people, cultures and organizations together.

Don’t ghost your estate plan!

Who would care for your children? Who could make medical decisions on your behalf? What happens to your home after you're gone?

They're not always easy questions to consider, but having your wishes in writing can make a tremendous difference for the people you love.

We're sharing five estate planning documents worth knowing about, including one Nebraska homeowners may not be familiar with.

If your estate plan has been gathering cobwebs, or you haven't gotten around to creating one, our Omaha and Lincoln attorneys can help you get started: 402-548-5418.
