Adding an adult child to your bank account might seem like a simple way to prepare for the future, but it’s important to understand what that decision actually means.

Making someone a joint owner and giving someone financial power of attorney are not the same thing. Joint ownership can give the other person ownership rights to the account, while a power of attorney can allow someone to help manage finances without necessarily changing who owns the assets.

Before making a change, think about what you’re trying to accomplish. Do you want someone to help pay bills if you become unable to manage them? Are you trying to make things easier after your death? Your goal can affect which planning tool makes the most sense.

Your home and bank accounts may be included in your estate plan, but your digital life deserves some attention too. Think about how much of your personal information now exists online. Photos stored in the cloud, email accounts, social media profiles, subscriptions, cryptocurrency, online financial accounts, and even business-related websites or domains can all become part of the picture.

Without a plan, your loved ones may not know what digital assets exist, where to find them, or who has the authority to manage them.

A good place to start is by creating an inventory of your important digital accounts and considering how you want them handled if you become incapacitated or pass away.
