One of my very first, and still one of my best, clients gave me some good advice that applies to anyone starting a business. He asserted that to properly start and grow a business, the business owner needs to have the following professionals “in their corner”: an attorney, an accountant, and a banker.

In every meeting I have with a person that wants to start a business, I ask them if they have an accountant and banker. In today's online world you can easily find generic legal forms and automated accounting programs. You can even obtain business loans without ever talking to a banker. What you miss, however, is a personal relationship.

With an online legal or accounting company, you will likely only get an expensive piece of paper. With a personal relationship, you also get that person's professional knowledge and experience. They will have an understanding of you and your business, so they can apply their expertise to your individual goals.

It takes tremendous effort to start and run a successful business. Having a team of professionals to support and advise you can save both time and money. It may even become an essential factor in your success.

Happy Bill of Rights Day!

The first amendments to the Constitution were ratified on December 15, 1791. The 10 amendments protect the most basic rights of Americans, known as the Bill of Rights.

Although the rights and freedoms enumerated in the Bill of Rights can be limited when laws are carefully crafted to enhance the public good, these rights still stand as the foundational support to protect US citizens from government overreach and tyranny.

Perhaps the best way to protect your rights is to exercise your rights and allow for others to exercise their rights even if their opinions or actions differ from yours.

On December 10th, 1948, the United Nations adopted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

This document established a foundation of basic human rights that should be codified and respected in every country. However, as we have witnessed over the years, this is not the case.

The United Nations does not possess the proper mechanisms to enforce its declarations. Therefore, important documents, like the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, only act as guidelines for member countries.

Nevertheless, we should still utilize December 10th as a day to remind ourselves of our past, present, and future in the protection of human rights.

Meet Brian. He is the owner of a tire store. He was sued by a large national company for allegedly not paying for tires delivered. The plaintiff sued both his company and Brian individually for over $200,000.

He was sued individually because the plaintiff alleged that Brian guaranteed he would pay the invoices personally if the company did not. At trial, we were able to show that the plaintiff’s math was incorrect and that their documents were suspect. We also showed that the signature on the personal guarantee was not Brian’s.

By obtaining the favorable verdict, we helped save Brian’s business and his life’s work. Brian is successfully operating Allen Tires in Omaha.

Many small businesses and individuals do not stand up to big corporations in these types of situations, and that is what the large corporations expect. However, with the right facts and the right attorney, David can still beat Goliath in a courtroom.
