Please remember that Signers must have current, unexpired, valid, government issued identification for the Notary Public. Passport, Driver's License or Senior Identification are most common. Help our older folks keep up-to-date ID's especially before a hospital visit or changes in luving arrangements. Thank you.

June 2023: as a reminder, if you need the services of a WA Notary Public, you MUST be ready to present valid, current photo identification. That can be a government issued Driver's License, a government issued Identification Card or a government issued Passport. This does not have to be issued in Washington state; however, it must be current or have been issued within the last 5 years.
Does your older relative need to get an updated Photo ID? I highly recommend that you arrange for them to get a Photo Identification available from the WA Dept of Licensing; especially if they are no longer driving or their mobility is getting restricted.
Notary Publics want to help and be of service. It is difficult to complete the Notorial Act when the Signer does not have valid identification.
Yes, there are times when "personal knowledge" of the Signer will work... but I couldn't possibly personally know that many people!!
Here is additional information regarding obtaining Photo ID in WA State:

January 2023. Starting out this year with 2 delightful Signings! Both entailed elderly signers: one a veteran and the other a dementia client. I respond to mobile Notary Public requests within a 30 mile radius (or so) of Olympia, WA. I enjoy helping people and try to respond as quickly as possible. PLEASE remember to have your valid, current identification with you. No ID, no Notary work! Acceptable forms of ID in WA state: Driver's License, Passport or some government issued ID. Ask when you make appointment - I can advise you. Happy New Year! Call me if I can be of assistance!

Well it's Notary Public license/commission renewal time for me! Got the WA-DoL portion done, now to renew/recertify on Notary (Loan) Signing Agent and the background check. New things every go-around.

However, the changes that apply to YOU:
Physical Presence
All signers must sign the documents to be notarized while in the notary public's presence. This is called "personal appearance." We can't notarize the signature of someone who contacts us only by mail, phone, or over the internet.

Proper identification
Before a notary may notarize a document, they must first confirm the identity of each party signing the document. There are 3 ways to properly identify a signer:
Acceptable Identification documents in WA state must:
Be current or expired for less than 3 years.
Be issued by a federal or state government.
Contain the individuals photograph, signature, and physical description.

Personal knowledge
This doesn't mean someone the notary was just introduced to. Ask yourself if you'd be able to describe your "personal knowledge" of the signer adequately when under oath in a court of law.
On the oath or affirmation of a credible witness
The notary must know the credible witness.
The credible witness must know the signer.
The credible witness must identify the signer to the notary.

Also new to WA state (permanently now) is Electronics Records Notarization and Remote Electronic Notarization. Still sifting through all of that but will add it to the "toolbox" shortly.

Make it a great day all! And remember, I'm in the west Olympia, WA neighborhood. Call or email if I can be of assistance to you as a Notary Public.

Sometimes finding a WA Notary Public can be a challenge. Utilizing a mobile Notary Public might solve your search. Always ask the mobile Notary Public what their fees are.
During these times of wearing masks, safe social distancing and finding suitable signing locations it is important that you have your criteria met and realize that the mobile Notary Public wants to remain safe as well.
Perhaps meeting at a covered outdoor area may work, or a library, or the general meeting areas of a government building. Have a visit with the mobile Notary Public and see if you can meet in an area that allows social distancing.
Remember that while masks may provide an element of safety, you will need to lower or remove your mask for the Notary to match your ID to your face. If at all possible leave the pets and children at home or in an area away from your signing... this will speed the process along!
