Estate planning is an act of love.
Thoughtful planning today helps protect your loved ones, no matter how your family is structured.

- Unmarried life companions - may have no automatic right to inherit or remain in a shared home without legal documentation. Years of shared life, financial contributions, and verbal promises may not be recognized unless the proper legal plans are in place, creating stress and uncertainty for the surviving partner.

- Married couples - may assume their wishes are automatically protected, but state law can sometimes interfere. Without proper guidance, outcomes may not reflect your intentions.

- Blended families - often face complex challenges. Thoughtful planning helps clarify decision-making, establish a clear approach to asset distribution, and reduce the risk of family conflict.

This Valentine’s Day, give a gift they'll remember with a comprehensive estate plan.

Call us at (360) 539-3388 to schedule a complimentary 15-minute phone consultation to discuss your unique situation.

Susan Kirkpatrick

Leave your family with clarity and guidance by including a Family Mission Statement with your estate plan.

While your estate plan protects your resources, it doesn’t explain why you made the choices you did. A Family Mission Statement does just that: a simple, heartfelt way to help your family understand your intentions and values.

Start crafting yours by asking yourself:

- What Matters Most?
Write down 3–5 values. “What do I hope my family remembers about what mattered to me?”

- How Can Resources Help?
Finish this sentence: “The purpose of our money is to ______.” Examples: provide security, support education, opportunities to travel, etc.

- A Message to Loved Ones
Share your hopes for their futures.

Call your attorney to include this document in your estate plan.

- Don’t yet have an estate plan? -
We’re here to help. Call before January 31st to receive $250 off your chosen plan. You can schedule your appointment for any future date that works for you—all you need to do is call to secure your appointment. Find peace of mind—let’s start the conversation today.

Want a More Meaningful Holiday Season? Try These 3 Things.

1. Share stories.

Your memories are treasures that only you can tell. Share how you met your partner, a childhood mishap, or an experience that changed how you see the world. These stories spark meaningful conversations and deepen connection.

2. Get creative.

Invite everyone to draw another family member, the magic isn’t in creating a masterpiece—it’s in the giggles, the surprises, and the simple joy of doing something together. Write out a list of everyone’s favorite holiday memories. And, of course, cooking or baking together keeps traditions alive and inspires younger generations to honor where they come from.

3. Offer wisdom.

Think about a profound lesson you have learned. How have you cultivated patience or mustered up courage in the face of fear? Your lived experience can become a source of guidance for younger generations.

At Life Seasons Estate Planning, we believe the most meaningful gift isn’t wrapped—it’s peace of mind found through a completed estate plan that honors your wishes and gives your family clarity when they’ll need it most.

Even if your partner isn’t ready, you don’t have to put your estate planning on hold. You can take steps to protect your loved ones, honor your wishes, and create a sense of peace for yourself.

1. Start with Communication
Try to understand the reasons behind your spouse’s reluctance—fear, cost concerns, or uncertainty often play a role. Approach the conversation gently, and with empathy. Explain that planning protects both of you, reduces stress for your family, and prevents unintended heartache down the road.

2. Educate and Share Examples
Sometimes, seeing real-life scenarios—such as family disputes, probate delays, or financial complications—can make the need for planning more tangible. Sharing resources, articles, or attending a workshop together can help open the conversation and ease fears.

3. Plan Individually
Even if your spouse won’t participate, you can create your own will, trust, healthcare directive, and powers of attorney. Solo planning may not feel ideal, but it creates a crucial safety net and peace of mind.

4. Work with an Attorney
An experienced estate planning attorney can represent one spouse if needed, and guide you through legal options, and help protect your interests.

5. Include Your Spouse Later
Your spouse can be added at any time if they change their mind.
Even with a reluctant spouse, taking these steps allows you to protect your family and honor your wishes.
