A little loon story from Raquette Lake...

Every year, volunteers with the Raquette Lake Preservation Foundation survey sections of the lake to count loons and chicks. While counting, they were surprised to spot four loons together, unusual since they are so territorial. It could be due to a nearby bald eagle, known for eating loon chicks, or possibly non-breeding loons.

A little farther along, they discovered a loon with a newly hatched chick on its back with another loon carrying a tiny fish to feed the chick.

While the loons were quite far away, they did manage to capture some beautiful photos to share. A reminder of how much there is to discover when you slow down and pay attention to nature.
