BREAKING: Comanche County Courthouse has closed to the public after an employee who was working in the basement was exposed to an unknown chemical that caused a medical response.

While the employee has been sent to the emergency room, the Courthouse has been evacuated out of an abundance of caution until the Lawton Fire Department’s Hazmat team and Oklahoma Bureau of Narcotics can determine what chemical he was exposed to and if there is any threat to other employees of the courthouse.

The employee’s status is unknown at this time. Emergency Management officials ask that residents avoid the courthouse until further notice.

The pandemic erected even more barriers between incarcerated people and medical access.

People incarcerated in more than 15 facilities across 10 states during the pandemic told Vox about frequent appointment cancellations, months-long delays, denials of specialty treatment, lack of post-surgery follow-ups, and going months without daily medications. And even as the initial crisis of the pandemic has waned, many behind bars are still suffering the effects of denied or postponed care.

These failures have potentially affected a massive number of people. In 2020, more than 1 in every 150 adults in the US was behind bars on any given day, by far the highest rate of any country in the world.

Medical neglect is not supposed to be an additional punishment. It also adds to stark racial health disparities in the US. People of color, particularly Black people, are five times more likely to be arrested and up to seven times more likely to be incarcerated than their white counterparts. As of 2018, approximately 1 in every 44 Black men in the US was locked up.

This story is part of The Aftermath, a Vox series about the collateral health effects of the Covid-19 pandemic in communities around the US.
