Police Officer Zade Abdelnabi was shot and killed responding to a call regarding an armed subject at the 4500 block of East Tropicana Avenue in Las Vegas.

The Michigan Association of Chiefs of Police is saddened to learn of the passing of Director Joe Scheid.

Director Scheid was a longtime member of the MACP and dedicated his career to serving the residents of the City of Coldwater and advancing the law enforcement profession. His commitment to public safety, leadership, and service made a lasting impact on the City of Coldwater and on colleagues across Michigan.

On behalf of the MACP Board of Directors, staff, and our members, we extend our heartfelt condolences to Director Scheid’s family, the City of Coldwater, the members of the Coldwater Police & Fire Departments, and all who had the privilege of serving alongside him.

In Honor and Memory of Director of Public Safety Joseph Scheid

COLDWATER, Mich. – On the evening of August 3, 2026, the Coldwater community lost a dedicated leader, public servant, and friend with the unexpected passing of Director of Public Safety Joseph Scheid. His loss has left a profound impact on the City of Coldwater, the Department of Public Safety, and the many people whose lives he touched throughout his career.

Director Scheid devoted nearly three decades of his life to serving the City of Coldwater. After graduating from Grand Valley State University with a Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice, Law Enforcement Emphasis, and completing the university’s Police Academy, he joined the Coldwater Police Department on December 8, 1996, as a Patrol Officer. Throughout his career, he steadily rose through the ranks, serving as Corporal, Sergeant, Deputy Director of Public Safety, Acting Director of Public Safety, and ultimately Director of Public Safety, a position he held beginning September 23, 2019. In preparation for leading Coldwater’s combined Police and Fire Department, Joe completed Fire Service Certification I and II, further demonstrating his commitment to serving the entire community.

Throughout his career, Joe took great pride in his work as a K-9 officer and K-9 Team Leader, as well as his involvement in specialized law enforcement efforts, including the CODE Team and drug enforcement initiatives. He became a strong advocate for addressing substance abuse in the community. Under his leadership, the Coldwater Department of Public Safety achieved accreditation through the Michigan Law Enforcement Accreditation Program, administered by the Michigan Association of Chiefs of Police. He was also instrumental in strengthening relationships between law enforcement and young people through the establishment of School Resource Officer positions.

Beyond the badge, Joe believed that investing in the next generation was one of the greatest responsibilities of public service. Whether through his involvement in youth sports, personally congratulating Coldwater High School graduates with handwritten cards, or establishing the Coldwater Police and Fire Scholarship Fund to support future public safety professionals, he consistently demonstrated a genuine commitment to the community.

The City of Coldwater extends its deepest gratitude to the members of the Coldwater Police Department and Coldwater Fire Department, LifeCare Ambulance Service, the Branch County Sheriff’s Office, Michigan State Police, Branch County Central Dispatch, city leadership, and the many community members who have offered their support and compassion during this difficult time.

Details regarding memorial services and additional opportunities to honor Director Scheid will be shared as arrangements are finalized. The community is asked to keep his family, friends, and all members of the Coldwater Department of Public Safety in their thoughts during this time.

Our condolences to the United States Department of Justice - United States Marshals Service for the loss of Deputy US Marshall Michael Andrew Hanson. Our thoughts and prayers are with Deputy Marshal Drew Hanson's family during this difficult time.

Deputy United States Marshal Drew Hanson was shot and killed while serving an arrest warrant for a fugitive on Rutland Road in Alexandria, Louisiana.

Our sincere condolences to the members of the Rittman Police Department, OH for the loss of Sergeant Scott Ries. Our prayers are with the family and friends of Sergeant Ries during this difficult time.

Sergeant Scott Ries was shot and killed responding to a call near 90 Chippewa Trail in Rittman at approximately 9:30 p.m.

After 27 years with the Birmingham Police Department, we congratulate Chief Grewe on his retirement.

Throughout his career, Chief Grewe led with integrity, professionalism, and an unwavering commitment to both our department and the Birmingham community. His leadership helped shape our organization and inspired everyone who had the privilege of working alongside him.

Among his many accomplishments, Chief Grewe graduated from the prestigious 283rd Session of the FBI National Academy, completed Eastern Michigan University's School of Police Staff and Command, and was recognized as a Distinguished Alumni Award recipient from Ferris State University.

Please join us in thanking Chief Grewe for his years of leadership, dedication, and outstanding contributions to the City of Birmingham. We wish him a happy, healthy, and well-deserved retirement!

The Michigan Association of Chiefs of Police commends the bipartisan collaboration that resulted in the passage of Michigan's balanced state budget.

We are especially grateful for the continued investment in public safety and the law enforcement professionals who serve communities across Michigan each day. The budget includes several critical priorities that will have a meaningful impact statewide:

$10 million to continue the Public Safety Academy Assistance Grant (PSAAG) program, which has helped agencies recruit and hire highly qualified future police officers while reducing the financial barriers to entering the profession.

$11.3 million for Continuing Professional Education (CPE), ensuring officers throughout Michigan continue to receive high-quality training that enhances their skills, professionalism, and ability to serve their communities.

$50 million for the Public Safety Revenue Sharing Fund, providing municipalities with additional resources to address violent crime and strengthen public safety efforts at the local level.

These investments reflect a shared commitment to safer communities, better-trained officers, and stronger partnerships between state and local government.

The Michigan Association of Chiefs of Police appreciates the bipartisan leadership that made these investments possible. We look forward to continuing to work with elected officials from across the state to advance policies that improve public safety, reduce crime, support victims, and provide Michigan's law enforcement agencies with the tools they need to protect the communities they serve.
