In a jury trial, closing arguments are critically important because they serve as the final, persuasive takeaway that summarizes evidence, restates the theory of the case, and leaves a lasting impression with the jurors. Takura was one of the faculty members for the Michigan Indigent Defense Commission’s most recent training on closing arguments. Not surprisingly, his faculty demonstration left a lasting impression on the participants. Here’s to more two-word verdicts!

Mary recently presented to the dedicated team at the Ingham County Public Defender's Office on mastering the evidence and discovery review process. Mary recently presented to the Ingham County Bar Association’s Criminal Defense Section about preparing for trial. The presentation—Tying It Up: A Trial Binder Roundtable—provided tips and best practices to prepare for trial litigation. Attendees also shared their tips, as well, which resulted in a lively and helpful discussion. Way to go, Mary!

Last week, members of C&N enjoyed a night of networking and fun at the WLAM Mid-Michigan Region’s Annual Meeting. Mary and Marisa were highlighted for some of their accomplishments over the past year, and everyone had a great time making charm bracelets as part of the event—even Nick! This was such a fun way to relieve some stress after work and to connect with others. Thanks for a wonderful event, WLAM!

Huge congratulations to our law clerk, Maisy, on her recent graduation from law school! While we are sad to see her go, we couldn't be prouder to see her take this next step.

Maisy is heading off to start her career as an attorney at the Salt Lake City Public Defender’s Office. Her dedication to justice and her tireless work ethic have been such an asset to our team. We know she’s going to be a fierce advocate for her clients in Utah.

Good luck, Maisy! They are lucky to have you.

Jackson County has a new judge! C&N was thrilled to attend the investiture of Judge Nicole Hughes. Judge Hughes will serve the people of Jackson County with dedication, wisdom, and empathy—what an honor to be present for this great event!

As a teenager, C&N’s client was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. Due to changes in the law regarding juvenile lifer laws that allow a potential for resentencing, Takura ultimately achieved a sentence that will allow our client to soon be released and get a second chance at life. Takura focused on our client’s significant rehabilitation and other mitigating factors to show that he will be a productive community member when released.

This weekend, Nick graduated law school magna cm laude, and he was selected to be the class speaker by his classmates! His speech was inspiring and resonated with all who attended. C&N was thrilled to join Nick’s amazing family and wonderful friends in cheering him on. And because you can never have too many Nicks, we thought we’d bring some Nick heads so he could easily find us in the crowd! CONGRATULATIONS, NICK!!!

Happy National Administrative Professionals Day!

Today we’re giving a well-deserved shoutout to Tony, our Firm Administrator and #1 problem solver.

Tony keeps the entire firm running smoothly - answering questions before we even ask them, fixing problems we didn’t know we had, and gently reminding us (Nick) to close the cupboard doors in the kitchen. We’re fairly certain the firm would descend into complete chaos within 7–10 minutes without him, but luckily, we’ll never have to test that theory.
