With rain continuing on and off throughout the week and 75% chance of rain specifically forecasted for Thursday, we will select an alternate date to celebrate with our members and our hosts at the Ojai Law Corporation.

This summer, several Ojai Law Corporation team families are celebrating the graduation of our children from high school and the start of college and other next opportunities this fall. We are parents who are proud of, and thrilled for, our young adult children, and we are also estate and health care planning practitioners who have a unique perspective of the legal changes that come with this milestone.

As soon as our children turn 18, we lose many of the opportunities we had when they were minors to help them in medical and financial circumstances. We no longer are their guardians and no longer have the right to medical information or decision-making authority in the event of an emergency. We also lose the ability to help manage their financial affairs. This can lead to traumatic and unintended consequences for families.

With that in mind, we encourage you to talk with your young adult child about this important topic. If they would like to have you step in as you always have in the event of a medical emergency, and if they would like for you to be able to manage financial matters for them, they can empower you to do so with very straightforward, short legal documents. Our attorneys, Carolyn Vondriska and Chris Cohen, would be delighted to meet with them remotely or in person and help them with these documents. It typically involves less than half an hour of time with your child, and they feel responsible and proud of themselves for having made these decisions.
