One of the things I love most about living near the beach is that it never looks the same twice.

The ocean has a way of reinventing itself every day.

Some mornings, the water is as smooth as glass, reflecting a pastel sunrise that seems almost too perfect to be real. Other days, the waves roll in with energy, filling the air with that unmistakable sound that instantly slows your heartbeat.

The tides change. The colors change. The light changes.

A summer afternoon carries a different feeling than a crisp fall morning. Even the same stretch of shoreline can feel completely new depending on the season, the weather, or simply the mood of the sea.

It's hard to explain until you have lived it.

You don't just wake up near the beach. You wake up to something different every day. A different view. A different breeze. A different reminder to pause and appreciate where you are.

That is what makes coastal living so special. It's not just about owning property near the water. It's about investing in a lifestyle that keeps giving back through quiet moments, natural beauty, and a daily connection to something bigger than yourself.

For many people, the beach is a vacation destination.

For others, it's the backdrop to everyday life.

And that's a difference you can feel every single morning.

For those of you who are lucky enough to call this area home, what do you love most about living near the beach?

Is it the sunrise walks, the salty breeze, the wildlife, the slower pace, or something else entirely?

Those of us who live here know there's something special about coastal life.

What do you enjoy most about calling the beach home?

Changes Are Coming to Carolina Shores and Southern Brunswick County!

Walmart and Publix move closer to opening new locations in Carolina Shores, bringing major growth and new opportunities to southern Brunswick County.

Construction activity along the Highway 17 corridor near the NC/SC state line is transforming the area into a growing retail and service hub. In addition to the new Walmart Supercenter and Publix-anchored shopping center, several new businesses are already planning to join the area, including McDonald’s, Chase Bank, Great Clips, 7-Eleven, and a dental office, with reported interest from Dunkin’, Eggs Up Grill, pizza restaurants, and urgent care providers.

The new Wal-Mart Supercenter project, originally approved by the Town of Carolina Shores Board of Commissioners in June 2024, is being built on approximately 38 acres along Highway 17 West. Plans include a more than 171,000-square-foot Supercenter featuring a gas station, drive-thru pharmacy, and additional commercial space. Construction officially began in Fall 2025, with a targeted opening sometime in 2026.

Just south of the Walmart development, construction is also well underway on The Commons at Carolina Shores, anchored by a new Publix Supermarket location. The approximately 47,000-square-foot Publix store will serve as the centerpiece of a brand-new shopping center designed to support the area’s continued residential and commercial growth.

As anticipation grows for the two anchor stores, additional businesses are already lining up to join the area.

These developments reflect the tremendous growth across Carolina Shores and Calabash as more families, retirees, and second-home buyers continue to choose coastal North Carolina. Residents can look forward to more shopping, dining, jobs, and everyday conveniences closer to home in the coming years.

One thing is certain: the Highway 17 corridor is changing quickly, and many residents will be watching closely as these projects continue to take shape through the year.
