Another tenant win born of partnerships between community and local government. Movement Legal attorneys provided the model ordinance.

On April 28, Novato passed the Tenant Protections Ordinance, marking an important win for renters in Marin County. The ordinance was shaped by months of research, legal drafting, community engagement, and tenants speaking directly about what displacement had done to their lives. As a Partnership for...

Lea esta historia en español. Of the city’s five council members, three voted in favor and a fourth was absent. Council member Abel Pineda was the only member who voted against the ordinance’s final adoption. In the past, Pineda has called for more protections for tenancies, especially for mobi...

At California Center for Movement Legal Services, we firmly denounce all acts of sexual assault, violence, and harassment—whether at the hands of a revered labor rights activist or an unscrupulous landlord. We offer our unequivocal support and solidarity to Dolores Huerta, Ana Murguía, and Debra Rojas, who have bravely shared their stories, and all survivors and victims.

We recognize the broader context and interconnectedness of systemic oppression, including patriarchy and white supremacy. These are hierarchical structures which shield abusers, victimize marginalized groups, and fundamentally damage everyone within the systems. Yet, no amount of historical contribution or progress can justify or excuse harmful acts committed by people within these systems of oppression. A movement for justice is only truly just when it is safe and equitable for all, which includes accountability for all.

Yesterday Movement Legal staff and other tenant advocates urged the LA City Council to extend the city's contract with Stay Housed LA past the end of the month—and tenants won. The Council voted to sign a new contract for 15 months, with two 1-year extensions, and added new data reporting requirements.

Stay Housed LA is a vital partnership between the City and County of LA, the community, and legal service providers including Movement Legal. The program is the first line of defense for many tenants for whom an eviction would mean becoming unhoused. In the U.S., nearly 90% of landlords have legal counsel when they go to court, but only 10% of tenants have access to an attorney. All renters should have the right to counsel, as Directing Attorney Christina Gonzalez explains.
