Gov. Ron DeSantis extends Florida eviction and foreclosure moratorium until Sept. 1
Gov. Ron DeSantis extended Florida’s eviction and foreclosure moratorium until Sept. 1, via an executive order signed Wednesday.

The moratorium was set to expire at 12:01 a.m. on Saturday.

The order was publicly announced shortly before 8 p.m. on Wednesday.

In addition to extending the deadline, the order included a few policy tweaks, such as explicitly stating that all missed rent and mortgage payments are due when the tenant or borrower “is no longer adversely affected by the COVID-19 emergency,” which it defines as job loss or other income reduction during the pandemic. DeSantis extends eviction and foreclosure moratorium until Sept. 1
Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis didn’t wait until the final hours to extend the moratorium on evictions and foreclosures this time around.

The governor on Wednesday night extended his executive order until Sept. 1 in the wake of the COVID-19 epidemic that has wreaked havoc on the economy, two days before it would have expired.

Last month, the governor waited until four hours before it was set to expire before extending it.

Without the moratorium, thousands of Floridians could have become homeless in days because landlords have been filing paperwork in court to evict non-paying tenants once the ban ends. More info:

By DAVID LYONS and BROOKE BAITINGER
SOUTH FLORIDA SUN SENTINEL | JUL 01, 2020 AT 5:25 PM
Thousands of evictions have been filed in Florida courts since the coronavirus pandemic began, and renters could find themselves in a quagmire when protections ultimately end.

At least 2,672 evictions are pending in the state, with landlords just waiting for a green light to oust their tenants, according to the nonprofit Community Justice Project of Miami, which provides, among other services, legal advice on housing for low-income workers. More info:

FLORIDIANS STRUGGLING TO PAY RENT MAY BE EVICTED NEXT WEEK
On June 2, Gov. Ron DeSantis’ ban on evictions will be lifted and many renters in Florida who are yet to receive unemployment benefits are terrified.

“They can evict me,” said Kim Schade who doesn’t have money to pay for June’s rent, on top of late fees stacked up from March, April and May. “They gave me a three-day notice saying they will do that.”

Schade has received notices on her door and texts from her landlord reminding her of the day that she may be thrown out on the street. More info: https://www.midlerkramer.com/floridians-struggling-to-pay-rent-may-be-evicted-next-week
