Starting January 1, 2027, parents may need to take their children to the DMV to obtain an e-bike license and pay registration fees.

Beginning January 1, 2027, Illinois' new e-bike law is scheduled to take effect, bringing new licensing and registration requirements for many riders.

Under the law, qualifying e-bike operators would be required to obtain a valid driver's license. Their bikes would also need to be titled, registered with the state, and covered by insurance before being legally operated.

In addition, local law enforcement would have the authority to issue citations and fines for violations involving certain e-bikes, e-scooters, skateboards, and other similar electric devices.

Supporters say these changes are long overdue because reckless riders have become a growing safety concern on streets, sidewalks, and bike paths.

Others argue that responsible riders—many of whom depend on e-bikes to commute to work or school—will end up paying the price through additional fees, insurance costs, and DMV requirements.
