School is reopening, please drive safe.
The end of summer break and beginning of a new school year is less than a week away! In the coming weeks you will see increased patrols from our officers with a focus on aggressive and dangerous driving. Please, slow down and keep these things in mind as traffic starts to pick up on local roadways:
🚘 Speed limits on most major roadways in the Township are 35 mph with the exceptions of Boonton Avenue, which is 40 mph. Split Rock Road and Farber Hill are 30 mph.
📵 New Jersey is a hands free state. If you are seen with a phone in your hand while your vehicle is in motion you can get a ticket. These tickets are court mandatory and can result in a loss of license.
⚠️ Boonton Township has solid yellow road lines throughout town. There is no passing over a solid yellow line. Motorists also are reminded that they cannot pass a stopped school bus when it has red lights flashing and a stopped sign displayed. Doing so can result in fines of $100 - $250, 5 points and possible license suspension.
🚙 🚗 Following too closely is dangerous and a primary cause of motor vehicle crashes in New Jersey. A safe rule to follow is to maintain one car length of distance for every 10 miles an hour you are traveling. Tailgating can result in a 5 point ticket.
🪪 GDL license holders must display their red plate stickers at all times and are limited to one passenger in their vehicle. Operating hours are limited to between 5am and 11pm.
🚲 E-bikes are limited to 20mph and require a helmet for anyone under the age of 17. They do not require a license to operate. E-bikes which can achieve speeds between 21-28 mph (or have power greater than 750 watts) are considered motorized bicycles. These are required to be used by licensed operators and must be registered and insured.
