Whether you're already helping behind the scenes or just starting to have "what if" conversations, here are 3 things every family caregiver should know before a crisis hits:
1️⃣ You need legal authority to act on your parent's behalf.
Without a valid Power of Attorney and Health Care Proxy in place, you may not be able to access medical records, manage finances, or make critical decisions, especially if your parent becomes incapacitated.
2️⃣ Long-term care planning starts before care is needed.
Medicaid is one of the few alternatives to privately paying for long-term care costs, but eligibility is strict and looks back five years.
Early planning can help protect assets while still qualifying for benefits.
3️⃣ Caregiving affects the entire family, and so does poor planning.
Without clear legal documents and a financial strategy in place, caregiving often leads to confusion, tension, and stress among siblings and extended family. A thoughtful estate plan can ease those burdens.
If you're starting to support an aging parent, or know that season is coming soon, it's time to start planning. We're here to help you do it the right way.💜
