LOCAL SPOTLIGHT: The Brentwood Restaurant & Wine Bistro – Little River

Most people know this Little River landmark for incredible food and ghost stories… but the music history deserves attention too.

The building itself dates back to 1910 and originally operated as the old town mercantile. Over the decades, it survived storms, changing economies, and the transformation of Little River from a quiet fishing town into a major coastal destination.

Today, live music inside The Brentwood feels different than your typical beach bar scene. It’s intimate. Historic. Almost like stepping into another era where conversations mattered and musicians played close enough to hear every lyric clearly.

There’s something special about hearing live jazz or acoustic music inside a building that has already lived through more than a century of Horry County history.

Some places entertain you.
Others make you feel like you traveled through time for a couple hours.

Have you ever been there?

One of the coolest things about Horry County music history is how many different sounds collided here.

Beach music. Country. Southern rock. Blues. Gospel. Even jazz.

Tourists came for the ocean, but musicians came because crowds here actually wanted to dance, sing, and stay out late. For decades, the Grand Strand became a proving ground where bands learned how to win over a crowd fast… or lose them just as quickly.

Old-school performers used to joke that Myrtle Beach audiences would “tell you the truth before your first set was over.”

And somehow, that pressure helped shape some incredible local talent over the years.

Even now, you can still walk into places around Horry County and hear live music almost any night of the week. That tradition never really disappeared — it just evolved.

Where’s your go-to spot for live music today?

Here’s a little truth bomb for anyone house hunting in Horry County:

The “perfect” house rarely exists.

The key is finding the house with the RIGHT problems — not NO problems.

Paint colors can change. Flooring can change. Fixtures can change.

What’s harder to change?
❌ Bad location
❌ Flood concerns
❌ Poor resale potential
❌ Traffic nightmares
❌ Problem neighborhoods

Too many buyers walk away from great homes over cosmetic stuff while ignoring the things that actually affect long-term value and quality of life.

A good buyer’s agent helps you look beyond the surface and make smart decisions that still make sense years from now — not just during the excitement of a showing.

🎶 MUSIC HISTORY MOMENT 🎶

In 1969, a struggling young piano player named Elton John teamed up with a lyricist he had never even met in person before: Bernie Taupin.

The record company literally handed Elton an envelope of Bernie’s lyrics and said, “See what you can do with these.”

That random pairing became one of the greatest songwriting partnerships in music history.

The crazy part? Bernie wrote lyrics first… then Elton composed the music afterward. Completely backwards from how many artists work today.

Together they created classics like:
🎹 “Tiny Dancer”
🎹 “Rocket Man”
🎹 “Your Song”
🎹 “Bennie and the Jets”

And despite decades of fame, touring, and enough sequins to blind a small city, Elton and Bernie have always said their biggest strength was understanding what the OTHER person was good at.

Music history is full of moments where one small connection changed everything.

🎤 LOCAL LIVE MUSIC SPOTLIGHT 🎤

Before rooftop bars and giant entertainment complexes became popular, smaller local venues were carrying the live music scene in North Myrtle Beach for decades.

One spot that still keeps that tradition alive is Boardwalk Billy's NMB Raw Bar, Ribs, and Sushi.

Known for waterfront views, happy hour crowds, and frequent live performances, Boardwalk Billy’s has built a reputation as one of those places where you can show up for “just one drink” and somehow still be there three hours later listening to the band’s encore. 😅

The North Myrtle Beach music scene has always had its own personality — less polished, more relaxed, and a lot more fun.

One of the biggest mistakes home buyers make in Horry County right now?

Focusing ONLY on the house price and forgetting about the monthly payment.

Between property taxes, insurance, HOA fees, and interest rates, two homes priced exactly the same can have wildly different monthly costs. A “cheaper” home can sometimes end up costing you MORE every month depending on the location and neighborhood.

Before you fall in love with a property:
✔ Ask about flood zones
✔ Check HOA dues and restrictions
✔ Estimate insurance costs early
✔ Look at commute times during REAL traffic hours
✔ Research future development nearby

The Grand Strand market moves fast, and having someone local helping you navigate it can save you a lot of money — and future headaches.

🎸 MUSIC HISTORY MOMENT 🎸

Before Journey became one of the biggest arena rock bands in America, they were actually considered a “serious musician” band in the mid-1970s. Their early music leaned heavily into jazz-rock and progressive sounds — and commercial success was pretty limited.

Then everything changed in 1977 when a young singer from California named Steve Perry joined the group.

That voice. THAT voice.

Suddenly Journey transformed into a hit-making machine with songs like:
🎵 “Don’t Stop Believin’”
🎵 “Faithfully”
🎵 “Open Arms”
🎵 “Separate Ways”

What’s wild is that “Don’t Stop Believin’” was never originally their biggest chart hit when released in 1981. It exploded decades later thanks to movies, TV shows, karaoke bars, sports arenas, and basically every drunk wedding reception in America. 😂

🍺 NORTH MYRTLE BEACH HAPPY HOUR SPOTLIGHT 🍺

If walls could talk, Molly Darcy's Irish Pub & Restaurant would probably have stories involving live bands, vacation decisions, and at least a few questionable karaoke performances. 😂

Located oceanfront, this longtime favorite blends Irish pub energy with classic beach-town nightlife. Over the years it’s become known for live music, packed patios, and one of those atmospheres where strangers somehow end up singing together by the end of the night.

There’s something timeless about grabbing a drink while listening to live music with the ocean just steps away. North Myrtle Beach has always thrived on places that bring people together like that.
