Congratulations to our ABA National Appellate Advocacy Competition (NAAC) competitors – Julie Jaquays, Aferba Ashong, Hope Estrella, Chris Iverson, and Jenna Shankman! Their performance at the NAAC Boston regional last weekend has been the best in the Society’s recent memory.
This year presented two of the most difficult civil rights questions that our legal system is grappling with today. Our teams tackled the doctrine of qualified immunity, which drew more than twelve petitions for certiorari to the United States Supreme Court in 2020-21 alone.
Our team of Julie Jaquays (3L) and Aferba Ashong (3L), compiled a record of 2-1 in the first three rounds, and they earned a spot in the semi-final. They were eliminated in the semi-finals after a close battle with a talented FIU Law team. Julie and Aferba were the second highest ranked team at the close of the qualifying rounds.
Our team of first-time competitors – Hope Estrella (2L), Chris Iverson (2L), and Jenna Shankman (3L) – compiled a record of 1-2, and, due to the strong oral argument performances of Hope and Chris, they barely missed the cut to advance to the semi-final. Their performance was highly impressive as it is extremely hard for debuting oral advocates to win matchups at NAAC, and a Quinnipiac debuting team has not done so in over a decade.
Individually, Julie Jaquays earned an award for being the 9th best oralist of the Boston regional based on the averaging of oral argument scores.
Alumni Cameron Atkinson, Taylor Wilcox, Geraldo Parilla, and Ashley Miller served as coaches, and Kevin Black, Jr. (3L) and Kyle Souza (2L) served as bailiffs and support staff for our NAAC teams.
Thank you to our coaches and bailiffs for your support, and to our competitors for representing the law school and the Society so well!
