Halloween is one of our favorite days of the year! We hope you embrace the creativity of the day, especially the the spooky costumes. But please do not make scary decisions 💀

If you plan to be out and about this Halloween, here are a few safety tips to keep top of mind:

🎃 If you’re drinking, always designate a sober driver or find alternative transportation. Studies show people who are mildly or highly inebriated underestimate how intoxicated they are. Keep in mind services like AAA, Lyft, and Uber often offer free rides on Halloween.

🎃 Look out for pedestrians. If you are driving on Halloween, be extra attentive to pedestrians, especially young trick-or-treaters who may be difficult to spot. In addition, put your headlights on even if it’s not dark yet, as this will increase your visibility.

🎃 Stay visible. If you or your children are trick-or-treating, bring flashlights and wear reflective clothing to help drivers see you better.

Have a safety tip to add? Drop it in the comments–we’d love to get a list going ⬇️

BACK TO SCHOOL!
Kids everywhere are back in school! 🎒📝 While this time of year is exciting, it can also be dangerous for pedestrians and motorists. Over our decades in practice, we have seen September and October bring horrific accidents involving pedestrians, cars and school buses.

We want to share some tips from our experience.

1. EXPECT KIDS TO BE EVERYWHERE. They are waiting for buses. They are walking. They are walking, talking, texting and joking with friends! They are on scooters, skateboards and bicycles! And they don't always stay out of the road!

2. SLOW DOWN in neighborhoods and near schools! Go slower than the posted speed limit! A child could step off a curb or dart out at any time. Whether or not you could be found at fault is not the point. No one wants to see a child get hurt.

3. GET OFF YOUR PHONE!

4. Don't block crosswalks! Take it from us, HORRIFIC accidents can occur when a car or bus blocks a crosswalk. A child may decide to cross between the cars and if so, may not be seen by oncoming traffic.

5. When backing out of parking spaces, look, look again and look again! Even the brightest college students in the country step off the curbs in New Haven behind backing vehicles. Again, fault is not the issue. Protecting our youth is ~ even when they make mistakes. Let's keep everyone safe!

On the 22nd anniversary of 9/11, we pause to reflect on the tragic events that reshaped our world. On September 11, 2001, acts of terror took nearly 3,000 lives and left an indelible mark on history.

Amidst the darkness, stories of unity and resilience emerged. Ordinary Americans displayed extraordinary heroism, as firefighters, police officers, EMTs, construction workers, and strangers selflessly aided the wounded amidst the chaos.
