The public deserves to know what happened in the SC Statehouse last week. We’re at a tipping point in South Carolina. S.244 is the most dangerous tort reform bill we’ve seen in decades — a direct attack on accountability, civil justice, and the injured people we fight for every day.

South Carolina Senators Talked About Helping Local Businesses. Then They Sold Them Out.

Senator Stephen Goldfinch did what others wouldn’t—he brought a common-sense fix for South Carolina’s liquor liability crisis straight from a unanimous House bill.

But when it came time to act?

The same Senators who’ve talked tough for years BLOCKED IT. They chose insurance lobbyists over SC businesses.

For years, they said:
• “We support small businesses.”
• “We believe in Main Street.”
• “We just want targeted reform.”

They lied. Flat out.

The fix was right there, in H.3497:
✅ No trial lawyer gifts
✅ No windfalls
✅ Just clean, targeted relief for bars, restaurants, and VFWs

And they folded.
Why?

Because they weren’t fighting for you.
They were fighting for:
• 🚛 Out-of-state trucking giants
• 🧪 Chemical polluters and PFAS forever-chemical water poisoners
• 🏭 Global manufacturers
• 💼 Billion-dollar insurance companies

S.244 is a Trojan Horse.

They say it’s about “reform” and “fairness,” but it’s really a get-out-of-court free card for corporate wrongdoers who hurt South Carolinians.

It’s a gift to:
☠️ PFAS polluters
⚙️ Defective product makers
🛻 18-wheeler fleets that maim and kill

What does S.244 really do?
❌ Lets defendants blame people who aren’t even in court
❌ Caps damages even in cases of gross negligence
❌ Guts underinsured motorist (UIM/UM) coverage protections you already paid for
❌ Makes it HARDER to hold out-of-state corporations accountable

If South Carolina senators truly cared about SC small businesses, Goldfinch’s amendment would have passed in 5 minutes.

Instead, they buried it—and handed power to corporate donors, insurance giants, and polluters in the process.

This isn’t reform. It’s a sellout.

South Carolinians deserve better.

🔥 We deserve to hold wrongdoers accountable
🔥 We deserve to protect Main Street—not Wall Street
🔥 We deserve jury trials—not corporate immunity

Name names. Share the truth. Vote them out. And STOP STONEWALLING H.3497!!

S.244 is the most dangerous attack on victims’ rights we’ve seen in decades. If passed, this bill will gut accountability, shield wrongdoers, and hand a massive bailout to billion-dollar insurance companies—making it easier for them to deny claims and leave victims without justice.

What’s Happening?

Governor Henry McMaster and Senate Majority Leader Shane Massey are holding a press conference at the South Carolina Statehouse next Wednesday, March 5th at 11:30 AM to rally support for S.244.

We Must Show Up and Fight Back

Trial lawyers, clients, victims, staff, and EVERYONE who believes in justice MUST SHOW UP at the Statehouse on March 5th.

We cannot let lawmakers sell out the people of South Carolina to pad the profits of Big Insurance.

Stand together, demand that senators vote NO on S.244, and make it clear: We will not allow billion-dollar insurance companies to rig the system in their favor!

The insurance industry and big business are mobilizing to ram this bill through the Senate floor next week—and they want no opposition.

If we don’t fight back NOW, this bill will pass—and the victims of negligence, corporate misconduct, and even criminal acts will pay the price.

What Does S.244 Really Do?

❌ Shields negligent corporations, hospitals, trucking companies, and bad actors from full accountability.
❌ Lets insurance companies pay victims LESS while they rake in RECORD profits.
❌ Makes it harder for South Carolinians to get justice when they’ve been harmed.
❌ Bails out billion-dollar insurers like GEICO, State Farm, and Berkshire Hathaway.

This isn’t “reform”—it’s a massive giveaway to corporate elites and the insurance industry.

SHARE THIS NOW and mobilize! We need to pack the Statehouse and show these lawmakers that South Carolina stands for justice, not corporate bailouts!

Tip from your friendly local lawyer; make sure you carry Underinsured Motorist coverage on your car! It’s not a part of “full coverage” and is not required by law in SC. This insurance covers you when the at fault driver’s insurance is not enough to cover your damages. Protect yourself and your family, carry UIM! The good news is, it’s affordable. Call our office, if you have questions. 📞
