“I had a gym membership I cancelled because I hurt my shoulder badly. As per the gym’s rules I had to show proof from a doctor, and I provided them with a doctor’s certificate, but the gym kept charging me and threatened to send me to collections. I called our law firm and they wrote one letter - the calls and the charges immediately stopped. Apparently, there’s a law which says if they don’t stop (once I provide a doctor’s certificate), I can sue them for $35,000. I always tell other people - if we don’t know the law, we can’t fight effectively.”

“I own a restaurant and was promised a certain great rate on my merchant card machine, so I signed a 4-year contract. After a few months, the rate started creeping up. I wasted hours at a time over months trying to get them to fix it each time the rate went up again, and got nowhere, so I was stuck in a contract, afraid of a hefty fee if I canceled.
