Pet Tracking Chips, Microchips and GPS Pet Tracking

Although microchips are often implanted in dogs and cats, these chips (about the size of a small grain of rice) contain identifying information about your pet and can be used to locate the owner. Veterinary offices, animal control, and some rescue groups, have scanners which can “read” the registry service and microchip number through the animal’s skin. The registry service can verify the current owner’s contact information only if the pet’s owner has kept the registry advised. These microchips cannot be used to LOCATE your pet, but can be used to IDENTIFY your pet if found, and to locate you if the registry information up to date.

On the other hand, there are various manufacturers of global positioning system (GPS) tracking devices which can be used to locate pets. These generally consist of a small transmitter with a battery which fits on the pet’s collar and a receiver, which is often a cell phone or computer. Some systems require the transmitter to be within range of the receiver to work, and the range can vary from a couple of hundred feet to about 5 miles. Some systems have a transmitter which notifies your cell phone when you pet escapes an electronic fence system, and provides real-time updates on his movements. Some systems have a receiver which allows the user to make the transmitter on the pet beep, but you must be within hearing range for success. Batteries in transmitters must be replaced regularly for the units to work on a day-to-day basis.
