GET HIGH QUALITY, ACCURATE LEGAL ADVICE!

The safety of our clients is a top priority for the Legal Aid Society of Eastern Virginia. We want to strongly recommend to all residents of Hampton Roads to be aware of challenges when using AI and careful about their use of AI for legal research. The Virginia Poverty Law Center and TechTonic Justice state in their guide to generative AI legal research that even when AI uses sources like government documents or legal aid websites to generate answers to your questions, that context is lost and, in many cases, AI programs (such as ChatGPT or Claude) provide incomplete or inaccurate advice. You can read more about how the risks of utilizing AI for legal research at TechTonicJustice.org

WHAT TO DO IF YOUR STUDENT IS THE VICTIM OF BULLYING!

Students with disabilities are more likely than their able-bodied peers to be the victims of bullying and depending on the severity of the bullying, it could be hindering their ability to receive a free and appropriate public education. Today, Taequan Kates, Director of LASEV'S Disability Rights Unit, discusses the first steps students and parents should take if they suspect bullying is taking place.

This week, our Disability Rights Unit is taking over LASEV's social media pages to get parents and students up to speed on their legal rights ahead of Back to School season. Our office provides FREE legal services to qualifying Virginians in matters such as education, family law, public benefit denials and more. To start an application for services, please call our locally staffed Community Support Team at 757-827-5078.

SIGNIFICANT MOLD AT YOUNG TERRACE!

Anthony Askew of McKee Environmental spoke at the Norfolk Redevelopment and Housing Authority’s Board of Commissioners meeting on August 13th about the significant mold and water damage issues facing our clients in Young Terrace. He noted serious mold and water damage to the inspected unit, as well as repairs that did not meet the correct standards for mold remediation.

The Legal Aid Society of Eastern Virginia has serious concerns about the quality of the mold testing and remediation being done by NRHA, so much so that we have hired McKee Environmental as our own mold expert to conduct testing in one of our client’s units. We believe that the concerns of residents regarding mold and water damage are being downplayed by the Authority and that NRHA is trying to shift blame for the conditions onto residents.

The Legal Aid Society of Eastern Virginia is a nonprofit law firm providing FREE legal services for low-income Virginians in civil matters including housing, family law, collections and more. We are committed to working with residents of Young Terrace and Calvert Square during the “redevelopment” of the St. Paul’s neighborhood. If you are NRHA resident with mold or water damage in your unit, please call our locally staffed Community Support Team at 757-827-5078 to start an application with our program.

Young Terrace Residents can call their Community Liaison, Megan Marmottin, at 757-648-1377 for faster service.
Calvert Square Residents can call their Community Liaison, Anitra Howard, at 757-627-5423 Ext. 176 for faster service.
