Cancer became an all-too-familiar part of my wife Autumn’s life when, at just 27, she was diagnosed with breast cancer. She fought hard, prayed harder, and never gave up. It was an incredibly tough journey—but it became a little more bearable when she met Melissa, a companion facing the same battle. Their friendship brought strength, hope, and ultimately the idea to help others.

From that bond, Lakes Area Grit & Grace was born—a community of support for women in the Lakes Area who are battling or recovering from cancer. Gals, If you, or a woman you know, are facing that long and often lonely road, I'd encourage you to reach out to Lakes Area Grit & Grace and allow their community to bear some of your burden.

I was thinking this morning how different everyday life is in 2025 from life in 2005. Here are a few examples:

You can Amazon almost anything you want to your doorstep. It will arrive in just a day or two. Yeah, I’m not gonna lie, that's pretty awesome. You can order groceries online, delivered to your door. There are even services that will do your laundry for you and deliver it all neatly folded. Crazy. Not to mention you can drive through for almost any type of food or beverage you are craving (assuming you actually want to leave your house).

Life is much more convenient. But…at what cost?

Sometimes I think as “convenient” as all these apps are, they are isolating us. We are losing human connection. We can so easily go through our day with little to no interaction with strangers. We don’t need to socialize or run errands when we can pay money to an app to take care of it for us. Yes, that’s easier. But there is a hidden cost to all of this.

Sometimes I wonder if we’re forgetting what it means to be human. We are social beings!

We’re not meant to stay at home all day and stare at screens (you’re probably reading this on your phone…ironic I know).

I am on a mission to challenge myself in this area. Is Mobile Banking or going through the drive-thru “more convenient?” Sure. But going into the bank allows me to smile, make eye contact, and give someone a compliment. I challenge you to join me and do one thing this week that might be less convenient, and purposefully seek out a connection or act of kindness to a total stranger.

Let’s be more human.
