I want to thank all of you who supported my campaign for Probate Judge. I am truly gratified by the outpouring of support and help we received throughout this campaign. So many of you devoted great amounts of time, effort and financial support which made our victory possible.

ALL of you have my sincere thanks AND my promise to do the very best job I can as Probate Judge to justify your faith in me.

If you have one of my signs, you can let us know to pick it up or you can dispose of it. We won't be needing them again. Thank you for proudly displaying them! It was greatly appreciated!

Started off today at the American Legion in Kinsman for a nice pancake breakfast and great conversations. On to St. Demetrios Community Center in Warren for their vendor fair. Found a lot of good products and met a lot of supporters; then on to Hubbard Lions Club for a spaghetti dinner. Had some really nice chats and one thing is clear, people are supportive and appreciate experience.

Busy day Saturday! Started off with the ribbon cutting ceremony for the Grand Opening of Imagination Station in Bazetta. Then on to the 60+ Gun Raffle at Yankee Lake. Next up, Spaghetti dinner at St. Patrick's (best sauce and meatballs) and last but not least, a 90th birthday party for my dear friend, Jim Bronson at Bronzwood Golf Club. It was good to meet so many new people and end up in a room full of friends.

Thank you John.

Over the years I have had many students come to the court to watch proceedings and see if the law is the career path that might be right for them. Today is Law Day and Alyvia Upshir, a junior at Maplewood High School spent the morning in court with me. She is considering attending law school to become a defense lawyer. It's always refreshing to see interest in the profession that I chose and I wish her great success in her future.

Inspiring Minds celebrated their 20th anniversary today with a gala recognizing students achievements and awarding scholarships. This organization, run by Deryck Toles, Founder and CEO, has a 100% graduation rate with the students they inspire! Working with these young minds is what the future is about. Education and success. I was happy to attend and see the progress this organization has made. Congratulations to Deryck Toles and his staff and volunteers, but most importantly, the students.

Criticism of Campbell misses the mark
Letters to the Editor

Apr 25, 2026

DEAR EDITOR:

As Trumbull County sheriff, I am responsible for overseeing the operation of the Trumbull County Jail.

Since taking office, the facility has consistently operated at or above its intended capacity.

Managing inmate population levels is an ongoing challenge. To remain in compliance with legal requirements and ensure safe operations, we regularly communicate with courts across the county. At times, we ask judges to review cases involving individuals currently in custody to determine whether adjustments to sentencing or bond conditions may be appropriate. These efforts are part of a broader, cooperative approach to responsibly managing limited space.

Our jail is a finite public resource, and its use must be carefully balanced. In practice, this often means prioritizing space for individuals who pose the greatest risk to public safety while working within the constraints we face. We appreciate that members of the judiciary and prosecution are mindful of these realities when making decisions.

I am aware of a recent public discussion by Judge Campbell of the Central District Court regarding a sentence issued in a vehicular manslaughter case of 14 days in jail. Now, a year later, he is being criticized for this sentence. Incidents involving loss of life are always tragic, and nothing in this discussion should diminish that reality. At the same time, sentencing decisions can involve many factors, including the specific circumstances of the case, applicable law, and broader system considerations such as jail capacity.

While I do not make sentencing decisions, I have seen a wide range of outcomes in similar cases over the course of my career in law enforcement. These cases are complex, and reasonable people may have differing perspectives when evaluating them.

Public office often brings scrutiny, particularly during election cycles. It is important that discussions remain grounded in a full understanding of the facts and the broader context in which decisions are made.

MICHAEL G. WILSON

Trumbull County sheriff
