While in the middle of “trial season”, this seemed particularly on point. I have had three trials in seven working days as well as submitted a court report as well as the regular dockets. It’s been a grind.

In 2014, I had the opportunity to represent a couple from Adair County that had a very similar experience as lots of families in Lincoln County experienced last night.

I visited the literal remains of their dream home and heard their story about waking up to rocks pummeling through their house, where their grandson slept. I still keep a 12" rock as a reminder of that case in my office.

I get a lot of questions about that rock, but it reminds me to be grateful for my loved ones, my home, and a peaceful night's sleep and reminds of what that family overcame that fateful night as a result of a gas explosion.

My thoughts are with this community and the families during this time.

Humphrey Law Office is open for business this morning. I will be closing early (around 3:30) due to the weather and an early morning appointment in Louisville. I'll be back in the office on Wednesday morning for regular business hours.

Our internet is still working, although its the same provider as the phone service. .

Jessamine Family Court is in session today. If you are scheduled for court hearings today and are not able to make it to court, please notify the Jessamine Family Court Clerk at 887-1005 or email Janet at [email protected].

Do not call the office. No one is answering the phone at the office today as the staff is out due to illness and the attorney is in court.

Disputes similar to this continue to pop up in family courts, except these facts are reversed in a lot of ways. Ordinarily, children go into foster care for a while and then a family member is discovered. The typical argument is placement with family instead of adoption by non-relatives.

While this is legally interesting case, the pertinent information is this: if a relative's child comes into state care and you may be willing to adopt or provide long-term care, contact the social workers immediately.

Kentucky appellate courts have leaned toward stability for the child with foster parents, despite appropriate relatives.

Couples in both Oregon and Laurel County are seeking to adopt a 4-year-old girl from southern Oregon, causing the states to dispute which has jurisdiction over her.

Great news for Jessamine County residents! Thank you, CLC and KBF!

We are thrilled to announce that we have been granted generous funding from the Kentucky Bar Foundation to start a Pro Se Custody Clinic in Campbell County and Jessamine County. At each clinic, participants will be provided with all legal documents required for a child custody action filing. Pro Bono attorneys will provide an overview of the child custody process, answer questions, and offer procedural advice. Law students will assist participants with completing and filing the legal documents. We are very excited about this new project. Thank you to the KBF for making it possible!
