The Massachusetts probate and family court has released the new 2021 Child Support Guidelines, effective October 4, 2021.

Here are some of the important changes. The Guidelines:

1. Increase the maximum combined
income from $250,000 to $400,000.

2. Give a maximum percentage for calculating support on income over the $400,000 amount, if the parties or a Judge calculate additional support.

3. Leave to the Judge's discretion, or agreement by the parties, whether child support or alimony should be calculated first.

4. Set a maximum amount for weekly child care to be deducted.

5. Make it clear that medical insurance deductions are for enrollment and premiums.

Additionally, divorcing parents no longer need to take a court-mandated parenting class. Many family mediators and attorneys are disappointed that the course is no longer required, because it helped to empower divorcing parents and provided helpful information for them about how to make the process less painful for their children.
