Boston College Innocence Program

Boston College Innocence Program BCIP is a BC Law clinic working to remedy and prevent wrongful convictions in Massachusetts

The Boston College Innocence Program (BCIP) is a clinical legal education program at Boston College Law School. Students and faculty study wrongful convictions and work to remedy or prevent these injustices through direct client representation and collaboration on law and policy reforms. BCIP focuses on cases where DNA and forensic evidence are not enough to prove innocence, giving students the o

pportunity to engage in complex factual investigation as well as work with forensic experts. BCIP also collaborates with the Committee for Public Counsel Services Innocence Program and with the New England Innocence Project as co-counsel in all aspects of the investigation and litigation of the clinic's cases. As a program within Boston College, BCIP collaborates with faculty, graduate, and undergraduate students from other University departments, especially the Graduate School of Social Work and the Psychology Department, providing holistic client representation and interdisciplinary research to inform policy reform. Wrongful convictions stole James Carver's freedom and separated him from his family for over three decades. Healing and the struggle for justice continue, but today we are honored to witness the reversal of his erroneous convictions, his freedom, and his joyful reunion with his loved ones.

It took collaborative persistence by the innocence programs of BC Law and the CPCS to win James Carverโ€™s freedom.

We are elated for Mr. Carver and his family! We are grateful to have collaborated with CPCS in his long quest for justice. And we celebrate the court's holding that convictions undermined by science cannot be final.

The man convicted of starting a devastating 1984 rooming-house fire in Beverly that claimed the lives of 15 and spurred statewide safety reforms has been granted a new trial.

Please join us and our community partners New England Innocence Project The Exoneree Network and the Committee for Public Counsel Services Innocence Program at the MA Statehouse on 10/2 starting at noon. We gather to honor the survivors of wrongful conviction and their loved ones and to learn about how innocent people are erroneously convicted of crimes they did not commit and what we can do to remedy and prevent these injustices.

Please join us on Wednesday, October 2, 2024, as advocates, legislators, exonerees, and community members gather at the Massachusetts State House to commemorate Wrongful Conviction Day, an international day of awareness dedicated to highlighting the causes, remedies, and emotional tolls of wrongful conviction.

In honor of this yearโ€™s theme, "The Pursuit of Truth," which underscores the ongoing efforts to shed light on wrongful convictions, we will advocate for much-needed reforms to ensure the criminal legal system protects the innocent and prevents these life-altering mistakes.

Following the State House event, we will march to City Hall, raising our voices together against injustice in honor of loved ones who are still incarcerated. No RSVP necessary to join.
