Many contracts have venue provisions. You can find yourself in court in another state unless you review your contract carefully and make sure any lawsuits are filed in California.

Before you sign a construction contract make sure the contractor is licensed and has workers compensation. If they have no workers compensation make sure they have no employees. Check the CSLB.ca.gov for this information.
