On July 8, 2026, a construction worker fell into a 10-foot trench at the Second Avenue Subway project near East 108th Street. FDNY reportedly brought in a large rescue response, including specialized rigging, air monitoring, and utility shutoffs, before the worker was lifted out and taken to Mount Sinai.

I’m grateful the rescue happened quickly, and I hope this worker makes a full recovery.

But a story like this is also a reminder of something we see again and again: construction sites can change in an instant. A trench, an opening, a missing guardrail, a rushed decision, or a condition that “everyone knows about” can become a life-changing injury before anyone has time to react.

If you work construction in New York, please do not tough it out after a fall or site injury. Get medical care. Report what happened. Write down who saw it. Take photos if you can do so safely. Save your boots, clothing, hard hat, and any text messages or work orders connected to the job. Small details often matter later.

And if you are a family member, coworker, or witness, your memory may help protect someone’s rights.

Pedestrians in New York City should not have to worry that an e-bike, scooter, or moped will drive down the street the wrong way, blow through a light, speed through a crosswalk, ride the sidewalk, hit them and disappear.

But that is what we New Yorkers are living with.

NYPD crash data shows that police-reported pedestrian accidents with e-bikes and e-scooters caused:

- 2023: 329 pedestrian injuries, 3 deaths

- 2024: 267 pedestrian injuries, 1 death

- 2025: 169 pedestrian injuries, 3 deaths

- January–June 2026: 44 pedestrian injuries

That is 809 injured pedestrians and 7 deaths in just three and a half years — and if mopeds are included, the numbers are even higher. I have represented too many injured pedestrians.

Compare that to one tragic horse-drawn carriage death in Central Park. Carriage rides were temporarily stopped, and there was an immediate renewed push to ban the industry. That was a senseless, terrible death. Every life matters.

But here is what should stop every New Yorker cold: in the past 150 years, that has been the sole human death from a New York City horse-drawn carriage accident, while in just the past ten years, NYC data shows 170 people have died in crashes with e-bikes, scooters, and mopeds!

Why does one danger get immediate political attention, while e-bikes, scooters, and mopeds injure hundreds of pedestrians and nothing meaningful changes?

We have rules of the road. We have traffic lights, stop signs, one-way streets, and sidewalks for pedestrians. None of that matters if the rules are not enforced.

This is not about punishing delivery workers or people trying to get around the city. It is about basic safety. If you operate a vehicle that can seriously injure another human being, you must obey traffic laws, be identifiable, and have insurance to protect the people you hurt. And insurance certificates should be prominently posted on these bikes and bikes without them should be confiscated.

This is a known danger and a preventable danger. A danger the city has the power to address.
