Someone opened a credit card or loan in your name?

Don’t just send a random dispute and hope it disappears.

Here’s what I would do.

First, go to IdentityTheft.gov and create an Identity Theft Report and recovery plan.

Second, pull your credit reports and identify every account, inquiry, address, or other piece of information you don’t recognize.

Third, preserve everything. Your reports, disputes, letters, emails, screenshots, and every response you receive.

And here’s something a lot of people don’t know: identity-theft victims can request that qualifying fraudulent information be blocked from their credit reports.
