Liakas Law was proud to have Senior Partner and trial attorney Nicholas Liakas featured as a speaker at the Connecticut Legal Conference, the largest legal conference in the state. Alongside Connecticut attorneys Megan Lyon and Aimee E. Sportini, Nicholas shared insights on navigating complex multistate workers’ compensation claims and construction accident cases.
The discussion centered on a case that came to Liakas Law after a Connecticut attorney reached out for help with less than three weeks remaining before the statute of limitations expired. Although both the employer and employee were Connecticut residents, the accident occurred on a construction site in Upstate New York, creating significant jurisdictional challenges.
The injuries were catastrophic. Our client was impaled by a forklift, suffering an intestinal rupture, fractured ribs, a punctured lung, three cardiac arrests, and the loss of approximately 80 percent of his small intestine after spending 45 days hospitalized, much of it in the ICU.
By navigating the complex interplay between Connecticut and New York law, Liakas Law secured New York workers’ compensation benefits and commenced a New York Labor Law action. What began as a case that appeared to have no viable path forward became a significant claim with a $25 million demand and, most importantly, a grateful client who was able to obtain the benefits and legal remedies he deserves.
Thank you to the Connecticut Bar Association, Megan Lyon, and Aimee E. Sportini for the opportunity to discuss an area of law that continues to have a profound impact on injured workers and their families.
