$2,000,000 Settlement Achieved

Liakas Law secured a $2,000,000 settlement for a Queens pedestrian who was struck by a utility vehicle while lawfully crossing within a marked crosswalk.

Our client suffered serious injuries after being knocked to the ground by a vehicle that failed to yield. Despite significant challenges, the case was aggressively litigated and ultimately resolved for a substantial recovery.

The settlement was obtained by Partner Boris Bernstein, whose advocacy and preparation helped achieve justice for our client.

Liakas Law was proud to have Senior Partner and trial attorney Nicholas Liakas featured as a speaker at the Connecticut Legal Conference, the largest legal conference in the state. Alongside Connecticut attorneys Megan Lyon and Aimee E. Sportini, Nicholas shared insights on navigating complex multistate workers’ compensation claims and construction accident cases.

The discussion centered on a case that came to Liakas Law after a Connecticut attorney reached out for help with less than three weeks remaining before the statute of limitations expired. Although both the employer and employee were Connecticut residents, the accident occurred on a construction site in Upstate New York, creating significant jurisdictional challenges.

The injuries were catastrophic. Our client was impaled by a forklift, suffering an intestinal rupture, fractured ribs, a punctured lung, three cardiac arrests, and the loss of approximately 80 percent of his small intestine after spending 45 days hospitalized, much of it in the ICU.

By navigating the complex interplay between Connecticut and New York law, Liakas Law secured New York workers’ compensation benefits and commenced a New York Labor Law action. What began as a case that appeared to have no viable path forward became a significant claim with a $25 million demand and, most importantly, a grateful client who was able to obtain the benefits and legal remedies he deserves.

Thank you to the Connecticut Bar Association, Megan Lyon, and Aimee E. Sportini for the opportunity to discuss an area of law that continues to have a profound impact on injured workers and their families.

The insurance company valued this case at $150,000.

After two unsuccessful mediations, they maintained that our client, a grandfather of four, had not been injured in the accident at all. Instead, they argued his complaints were entirely attributable to preexisting conditions that had affected the same body parts and kept him out of work for nearly five years before returning to work on what became his second and final day on this job.

When the case reached trial, Nicholas Liakas stepped in to try the matter.

The jury rejected the defense narrative and returned a verdict of $3,101,000.

With statutory interest following summary judgment on liability, the value of the recovery now exceeds $3,500,000.

A meaningful result for a deserving client and a reminder that a prior injury does not give a defendant a license to cause another.

At Liakas Law P.C., we fight for justice on behalf of every client.

Trial-ready on the eve of trial in New York County.

Liakas Law secured a significant resolution for our client after the case was fully prepared for jury selection and trial. Managing Partner Dean Liakas negotiated the settlement following years of rigorous litigation led by Associate Ann Vitti-Cabrera, who managed discovery and case development from inception.

When cases are meticulously prepared and strategically positioned for trial, defendants are compelled to confront substantial risk.

Another successful outcome for an injured New Yorker.

Trial Attorney Paul Bitetti secured a $4.1 million jury verdict on behalf of a 58-year-old man who was struck by a piece of wood that flew off an unsecured sidewalk shed during a storm.

Before trial, the defense offered just $75,000.

Total Verdict: $4,100,000

Unsafe construction conditions put the public at risk every day across New York City. When property owners and contractors fail to secure their sites properly, the consequences can be catastrophic.

Congratulations to Trial Attorney Paul Bitetti and the entire Liakas Law trial team on another outstanding result for an injured New Yorker.

$2.2 Million Civil Rights Settlement | Bronx County

Accountability matters, especially when a life is lost behind prison walls.

Liakas Law attorneys Cassandra Rohme, Chair of the Civil Rights Division, secured a $2.2 million settlement on behalf of the Estate of a 27 year old man who died in solitary confinement after being found unresponsive in his cell.

Cases involving deaths in custody raise profound questions about dignity, oversight, and the responsibility institutions have to protect those in their care. While no result can undo this tragedy, accountability remains essential.

We are proud of Cassandra Rohme for her work pursuing answers and justice for this family.
