Attorney of Counsel Michael Lawrence, who leads CoveyLaw’s Non-Profit & Business Practice, recently provided his legal expertise for an article with Complex. In the article, Michael provides clarity on the current Bad Bunny lawsuit, including what falls under copyright law, what constitutes a right of publicity claim, and how a case like this might resolve.

I was recently interviewed by Cindy Watson on Practicing with Purpose. I'll be on episode 15 which airs this coming Monday, March 28th at 9am. I had a great time talking about my experience working with artists and how that has impacted me as an attorney and as a person.

In my featured episode, we really delved into:
- Surrounding yourself with creatives can help balance your practice and your inner passion for the job.
- This can also help you get out of the mindset of thinking there is only one solution. Creatives help you think outside the box.
- Developing friendships and connections with former clients through meaningful work together.
- Senior counsels being stuck in their ways; maybe it’s time to rethink how you’re doing things if it’s been a while.
- Artists don’t often have a lot of people to speak up for them; by doing so, it can create a lasting difference for the firm and your practice.

In early October I was honored to be asked by Parsons School of Design Adjunct Professor Angeline Gragasin who is part of the leadership of one of my clients, Happy Family Night Market, to talk to her students on Zoom about my experience and perspective on creative entrepreneurship as a lawyer and entrepreneur who works with artists, musicians and other creatives. I really enjoyed sharing my experiences with the students and their questions showed how engaged they are in their studies. I’m happy to report we can expect a bright young crop of creative entrepreneurs bringing their talents to the business world!

I was honored to be asked to sit on a panel of Entertainment Lawyers by the Thurgood Marshall Pre-Law Society at Binghamton University. Here are some highlights of comments I made throughout the afternoon panel. It was really good to be back on campus and share my insights with the students in attendance!

I participated in a press conference in front of City Hall last week organized by NYC Artist Coalition to rally support for a bill to create transparency on the M.A.R.C.H. program which has raided and shuttered vital cultural spaces in NYC.

"I’ve served as an attorney for a few arts spaces in Bushwick, including The Silent Barn. Since I’ve worked with these spaces I know that it is possible to comply if you have help. Unfortunately a lot of organizations and venues do not. And so what we would like from the City is instead of coming down with the gotcha heavy hand, have a dialogue with these spaces. And provide assistance. In most cases it will be possible for a lot of these places to know what they should be doing, and comply with the law," said Mike Lawrence of Lawrence Law

New York City Council members Stephen Levin and Rafael L Espinal introduce a bill to create TRANSPARENCY ON M.A.R.C.H.

NYC’s M.A.R.C.H. raids shutter vital cultural spaces, adding vacant storefronts. NYC's cultural spaces should be nurtured, not targeted in a SWAT-like raids. We need .

I had a fun conversation with Personal Technology Journalist, Katherine Bindley from The Wall Street Journal about my exclamation point usage double-life! Some of my musings can be found in Today’s print edition!

We’ve become addicted to exclamation points in emails and texts as a way to fill in facial expression and tone. Going cold turkey freaks people out; ‘You’re not your normal, cheery, bubbly self.’
