Emmanuel Todd, the French historian, who predicted the collapse of the USSR, did so by looking at the living conditions of the Soviet people. The Soviet Union’s rising infant mortality and su***de rates and its falling life expectancy, he said, foretold the end of an empire. Now look at the United States, which has similarly dire indicators. Covid deaths have soared there because of the atrocious American diet, the ‘dysfunction of the health system,’ and the tsunami of misinformation that drives Americans to take horse medicine and shun vaccines. Opioid deaths are also up, because so many Americans are now addicts. These are ‘markers of despair.’ Coupled with the surge in violence, they show that the U.S is a fundamentally ‘damaged society.’”
