A contracting process is not intelligent simply because it can analyze a clause.

The real test is whether it helps someone decide what to do next.

That was one of the central themes in our recent webinar, where Factor’s Nimal Hemelge explored what AI can add to the workflow and structure CLM already provides.

During a negotiation, the context behind that decision is often scattered across the business: the objectives people carry in their heads, the guidance captured in playbooks and policies, the terms of the agreement and lessons from previous negotiations.

Analysis only becomes useful when those sources of intelligence are brought together at the moment of decision.

Should the team accept the change? Counter it? Ask another question? Route it for review? Or decide that no action is needed?

This is the difference between automating a task and supporting a decision. When intelligence connects analysis to an action and the surrounding workflow, CLM becomes more than a system for moving contracts from one stage to another.

It has become a foundation for better contracting decisions.

A CLM can route a contract for approval. The person receiving it still needs to understand what changed, why it matters to the deal and whether to accept it.

In last week’s webinar, we explored how AI can bring together the context behind those decisions: what the contract says, what the business needs and what the team has learned from previous negotiations.

The opportunity extends to improving the process itself. If the same issue is repeatedly escalated and approved, that’s evidence to revisit the playbook or approval threshold.
That decision support also needs to be traceable. Lawyers and legal professionals should be able to check the contract language, guidance and facts behind a recommendation.

Don’t know where to start? Identify where you’re wasting time, losing context or making inconsistent decisions, then map what needs to change.

Most legal teams have AI. Few have truly turned it on.

At Running Legal Like a Business, Factor’s Alex Denniston led a hands-on workshop on applying AI to everyday legal work. Participants tested different approaches and explored how to build the skills and judgment needed to use it confidently.

The conversation continued at the Factor booth, where attendees discovered their AI leadership archetypes and reflected on how their own leadership styles shape the way they drive adoption and change.

The starting points may differ, but the challenge is often the same: moving from isolated experimentation to consistent, meaningful use.

Teams need practical skills, trusted workflows and clear direction to turn that access into measurable impact.

How should legal professionals decide which tasks to give to AI?

During a Sensemaker Academy taster workshop, co-hosted with NOVA8, Factor’s Jonathan Ash shared a simple mental model: think of AI as three different colleagues.

1. The analyst extracts, summarizes, answers and assesses.

2. The editor rephrases, simplifies, explains and restructures information.

3. The creator acts as a thought partner, helping you generate, challenge, draft and explore ideas.

The value of this framework is its simplicity. By first identifying the role AI should play, legal professionals can give it clearer direction and get more useful results.

How can AI help legal teams get more from the CLM they already have?

That was the focus of yesterday’s webinar with Factor’s Sandy Devine, Nimal Hemelge and Andrew Hunter.

CLM remains an important foundation for contracting, but it cannot provide every piece of context needed to make a sound legal decision. AI can help close that gap by applying playbooks and risk logic, surfacing the right information and showing why a decision or redline was recommended.

But the model alone is not enough. Trust requires traceable sources, clear reasoning, proportionate review and human accountability.

The contracting lifecycle becomes truly intelligent when learning from each agreement improves the next intake decision, negotiation, approval and business outcome.

As AI-generated content becomes harder to distinguish from human work, detection may be the wrong goal.

The more useful question is how AI was used.

For legal teams, that means understanding what context was provided, how the output was interpreted, what was verified and where human judgment was applied.

In a recent workshop for ACC Singapore, Factor’s Jon Ash explained why asking about the process behind an AI-assisted output should become a routine reflex. It is a simple shift that can surface potential issues while helping teams use AI more reliably, safely and confidently.

Drawing on the Sensemaker Academy curriculum, the session explored why responsible AI use is not about proving that a human wrote every word, but making sure the work can be trusted.
