I started practicing family law by representing children in family court in 1997, and founded Rosenthal Law & Mediation in 2006. We tend to avoid having difficult conversations—whether it's because we don’t want conflict, or feel too vulnerable, or just don’t know where to start.

A recent New York Times article highlighted a few very similar techniques to what we do in mediation, like choosing the right moment, giving the other person a heads-up, and staying focused on the core message while truly listening.

Ultimately, the goal of these hard conversations isn't to "win" an argument. It’s about working together to show that the depth of your relationship is far more important than the single conflict at hand.
