In recognition of Black History Month, Bryant Rabbino LLP honors Constance Baker Motley, an African-American legal trailblazer who advanced civil rights and played a prominent role in desegregation.

Motley graduated from New York University in 1943 and earned her law degree from Columbia Law School in 1946. While still a student, she joined the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund, where she later became one of the organization’s first female attorneys and later its principal trial attorney. Mentored by Thurgood Marshall and other leaders of the civil rights movement, Motley used the law as a tool for social change, shaping her remarkable career.

She argued nine cases before the U.S. Supreme Court, winning eight, and helped end segregation in schools, universities, and public spaces across the South. Motley was elected to the New York State Senate in 1964, becoming the first African-American woman to serve in that branch of the Legislature. In 1966, she became the first African-American woman appointed to the federal judiciary as a judge for the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York, and later served as Chief Judge from 1982 to 1986.

Motley paved the way for future generations, and her legacy continues to inspire those advancing civil rights and justice nationwide.

In recognition of Black History Month, Bryant Rabbino LLP honors Charles Hamilton Houston, an African-American legal trailblazer whose work laid the foundation for the dismantling of segregation in the United States.

Houston served as the first general counsel of the NAACP and earned the moniker “The Man Who Killed Jim Crow” for his brilliant legal strategies challenging the “separate but equal” doctrine. He mentored a generation of civil rights lawyers, including Thurgood Marshall, shaping the fight for equality through the courts.

A Harvard Law graduate and former dean of Howard University Law School, Houston used the law to expand opportunities for African Americans and to challenge Jim Crow policies, particularly in education, housing, and jury representation. His innovative legal strategies directly paved the way for desegregation and the landmark decisions that followed.

Houston’s groundbreaking work challenged systemic discrimination and reshaped the legal landscape, leaving a legacy that continues to inspire civil rights lawyers and advocates advancing equality today.

In recognition of Black History Month, Bryant Rabbino LLP honors Thurgood Marshall, an African-American legal trailblazer whose work transformed American law and civil rights.

Marshall graduated from Lincoln University in 1930 and earned his law degree from Howard University School of Law in 1933, graduating first in his class. Mentored by Charles Hamilton Houston, he used the law as a tool for social change, a principle that guided his remarkable career.

He joined the NAACP as a staff lawyer and, in 1940, became chief of the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund. Marshall argued 32 cases before the U.S. Supreme Court, winning 29, and helped end segregation in public schools, reshaping American education and civil rights law.

In 1967, after serving on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit and as U.S. Solicitor General, Marshall became the first Black Justice of the United States Supreme Court. During nearly 25 years on the Court, he fought for civil rights, opposed discrimination, and championed equal opportunity for all.

Marshall’s legacy continues to shape the ongoing pursuit of justice and equality.
