After dozens of battery fires throughout New York state in the past year, experts in fire prevention and recycling say consumers need to take lithium-ion battery education seriously.

"They are causing problems not just here locally but across the state," said Michael Lutestanski, Oswego County’s director of solid waste.

Vice president of Operations for The Battery Network Eric Frederickson said 90% of New Yorkers live within 10 miles of a lithium-ion battery recycling station.

Back-to-school season is officially here in the city that never sleeps—and while you’re grabbing notebooks and uniforms, don’t forget to prep your child with something just as important: safety smarts. Living in New York City means our kids navigate a unique urban environment—so taking the time to talk safety now can go a long way in preventing accidents later.

While some incidents are just accidents, there are a few key areas where a little awareness can make a big difference.

New research shows that speeding has become the norm. According to AAA, three in 10 drivers agree. However, that mindset can have negative consequences.

The latest data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration shows that in 2024, 30% of traffic fatalities across the country involved speeding.

It's an issue that officials often see in New York. That's why they are urging people to slow down.
