The Kurland Group

The Kurland Group The Kurland Group is a full service, boutique law firm serving the LGBTQ community, as well as our straight allies, of New York.

At the core of our work is a belief that clients’ needs come first—legal and individual. Our attorneys bring high quality, individualized representation, in a private practice setting. In doing so we make a significant commitment to the public interest, ensuring quality legal representation for the underrepresented. We understand that retaining an attorney is a tremendously important undertaking.

Regardless of your needs, our firm will work to ensure you get individualized attention and a team of experts to ensure the best results. We strive to make the experience as empowering as possible, by working with our clients to come up with uniquely crafted solutions, in concert with the best legal strategies. This allows us to take into consideration the whole person and unique situation we are representing. By using this holistic approach in our practice, we are able to offer our clients the best in traditional legal resources using an innovative approach which guarantees the best overall term care for our clients.

The Kurland Group worked with The LGBT Bar Association of Greater New York to obtain a major legal victory for LGBTQ families in a ruling yesterday out of the Second Department.

"Yetta Kurland, founder and senior partner of The Kurland Group in Manhattan...said on Wednesday that the court’s protection of the family’s 'safety and security … resonates so deeply. They were looking at the potential of an absolute stranger being thrust into the middle of their family, which would have been devastating to them,' she said."

"Said Erica Kagan, counsel at The Kurland Group...'This decision is a crucial and important piece of the fight for justice for LGBT families. The marriage presumption is supposed to help to provide safety and security for families, and when it was being applied differently to same-sex marriages, that was an important misapplication of the law.'"

Lawyers and civil-rights advocates consider the rulings to be a “milestone for the ongoing fight for LGBT equality” said Brett Figlewski legal director of the LGBT Bar Association of Greater New York.
