When we fight, we win. After community pressure led by NYU law students, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement - the Office of the Principal Legal Advisor (ICE-OPLA) has confirmed that they are cancelling interviews at the NYU School of Law’s Public Interest Legal Career Fair (PILC Fair). ICE-OPLA has participated in the PILC Fair for years, despite demands of students and other immigrant rights advocates to uninvite and ban the federal agency.

Deportations do not just happen at the U.S.-Mexico border but throughout our communities nationwide in U.S. Department of Justice deportation courts. In these courts, ICE-OPLA is the subagency that prosecutes people for deportation and ICE detention, alleging they are not U.S. citizens and are present in the United States in violation of federal immigration law. ICE-OPLA also argues people should remain detained while they fight their deportation cases.

Though ICE-OPLA has now cancelled all “drop-in style interviews” with potential students, they will conduct interviews for those who proactively scheduled an interview with the federal agency known for terrorizing and separating families.

The Association of Legal Advocates and Attorneys-UAW Local 2325 once again calls on NYU School of Law to uninvite and ban representatives from ICE-OPLA to participate in the PILC Fair.

Over 50 years of ALAA!

https://youtu.be/OW7RvKUfVFU?si=Jr7qVYqxy4VDfRM9

ALAA has come a long way from its origin as the first significant labor union of attorneys in the United States, transforming into an organization of legal services workers of all stripes and forever altering the terrain of public defense in New York. As we continue to march, fight, strike, and litigate side by side with our clients and communities, we hope to honor and draw inspiration from our history in the pursuit of equal justice for all.

After months of negotiations with The Legal Aid Society we still have no contract, salaries are flat since 2021, staff are leaving in droves, and workloads are more unconscionable every day.

We will be holding a 5-boro picket on 2/8 at 1pm to demand a contract.
