Last night’s Medical School for Lawyers - Orthopedics & Radiology - was another wildly successful event! Building damages by understanding the medicine. Thank you to Dr. Strachan, Dr. Ketner and my co-chair Jeff Korek. Look out for the next course - general and vascular surgery!

Plaintiff’s verdict! Loss of an o***y in an 8 year old girl due to a 7cm mass that caused her o***y to torse (twist cutting off blood supply). We claimed she should have been admitted to the hospital for surgery. Defense claimed it was not a surgical emergency and could be handled as an outpatient. Jury unanimously found Staten island university hospital 75% responsible and Dr. Trentacosta 25% responsible. $600k award. There was never an offer to settle.

Justice was served. $1m plaintiff’s verdict in Richmond County in a failure to diagnose Fallopian tube cancer case. Fallopian tube cancer is an extremely rare cancer (only 300-400 women diagnosed annually) of those women only 15% of them present with early signs and symptoms. Fortunately, my client, 63 years old, did present with early signs and symptoms and the defendant doctor missed them. Unfortunately, the doctor did not diagnose it. As a result of the delay, the cancer went from stage I (84.5% chance of survival) to stage IV (0%). She died a year after she was diagnosed. The jury found the doctor was negligent and awarded $1m in damages. The insurance company never made an offer to settle.
