From Family Advocate to Trusted Legal Professional - Meet Heymi
Heymi’s introduction to the legal field began with a deeply personal experience. As the eldest child, she assisted her parents during their naturalization process, providing translation support and helping them review and understand complex legal documents.
“I didn’t feel that they were represented properly. That process made me aware of how many people are underrepresented and overcharged.”
From that moment, she committed herself to learning the legal system so she could advocate not only for her family, but for others navigating it as well.
Her career began at a small bankruptcy firm handling high-volume filings, where she found real purpose in helping clients secure financial fresh starts. During that time, she filed Chapter 13 cases that enabled homeowners to stop foreclosure proceedings and confirm repayment plans that addressed their arrears. Many were able to keep their homes. She later applied that same knowledge to help a family member successfully modify their mortgage and avoid foreclosure.
Heymi went on to manage her own office and became a certified paralegal. At a larger firm, she further developed her litigation skillset, including assisting in a month-long trial that significantly shaped the foundation of her courtroom experience.
R3M Law is the first firm where she has been able to work across both bankruptcy and litigation, and the role she enjoys most is serving as a trustee’s assistant.
“Working on the debtor side for many years gives me an advantage in this role.”
She also credits the mentorship she has received at R3M as one of the most meaningful experiences of her career. Working closely with Howard Magaliff, she has gained hands-on insight into bankruptcy practice at a level she had not experienced before, and she notes that she has learned more in her time at R3M than in the 15 years prior in the field. She attributes that growth to Howard’s patience, depth of knowledge, and willingness to invest in her development.
Outside of work, Heymi recharges by being fully present with the people she loves most. She unwinds with a good thriller novel, enjoys long dinners with her husband and sons, and values meaningful time spent with family. Long walks with her fluffy dog, Luna, are a regular part of her routine.
Something Heymi’s colleagues may not know is just how much she loves to dance. “As a Latina, it is something I will never stop doing. It’s part of my culture.” While her schedule does not always allow as much time for it as she would like, dancing remains an important part of who she is. These days, she has two enthusiastic dance partners at home, as her boys have learned the moves right alongside her.
At R3M, Heymi applies focus and intention to her work. She is committed to delivering high quality support to the firm’s attorneys and clients, remaining a trusted and reliable presence on the team, and helping new members find their footing as the firm continues to expand.
