Today, we proudly honored our Past Man of the Year, Assistant Chief Matthew Galvin, as he walked out of One Police Plaza after an incredible 38 years of dedicated service to the New York City Police Department.

From patrol to leadership within the Operations Division, Chief Galvin’s career reflects unwavering commitment, professionalism, and pride in the shield. His impact across numerous commands and specialized units leaves behind a legacy that will not be forgotten.

The turnout today was a testament to the respect he’s earned throughout the Department — a well-deserved sendoff for a remarkable career.

It is with deep regret the department announces the passing of retired Firefighter Thomas Glenn Smith, Engine 224-who succumbed to his WTC related illness on March 26, 2026. Firefighter Smith served our great department for 21 years.
