Yes. I went full nerd-mode and visited the United States Patent and Trademark Office (“USPTO”). This is the entity that decides whether your trademark will be registered…or tossed to the side.
For someone who practices and talks about trademark law all over the country, it was nothing short of magical.
Being there reinforced my appreciation for brand protection and the value of brand identity. It was like seeing the trademark process and the legalities behind it come to life.
If you didn’t know:
Trademark registration provides a business with exclusive legal rights to its brand, which builds value, protects its identity, and offers strong recourse against infringers. While some limited rights exist through common law use, official registration with a national office like the USPTO offers far more robust and comprehensive protection.
What can be registered?
generally, the most common types of trademarks to be registered are: name, logo, slogan.
