It’s already that time of year – open house season!

If you’re a parent of a special needs child, equip yourself with the right questions before heading out:

* What accommodations and modifications are available to meet my child's IEP/504 Plan?
* How do you ensure teachers are trained in inclusive education techniques?
* Can my child access both academic and extracurricular activities fully?
* How do you support transition planning for life after high school?
* What peer programs or mentorships exist to promote social inclusion?

Remember: You're an advocate for your child's best future. You're paving the way for a successful and inclusive high school experience by asking the right questions.

As a special education attorney, I'm continually inspired by how the rich tapestry of contributions people from Hispanic or Latinx communities have made have shaped our nation and our communities.

Diversity is our strength, and during this Hispanic/Latinx Heritage Month, we honor the countless achievements, contributions, histories, and traditions of Hispanic Americans.

According to the National Coalition for Latinxs with Disabilities (CNLD), approximately 12 million Latinx people identify with some type of disability.

Let's continue to advocate for inclusive education where every child, irrespective of their background or abilities, has a chance to shine.

Life's challenges affect everyone, no matter your age, race, location, role, or abilities.

September is National Su***de Prevention Month.

As a special education attorney, I witness firsthand the unique struggles these incredible kids face daily–and often their tireless parents and caregivers.

Remember, mental health support and understanding can be as essential as academic adjustments. We need to ensure each one of us feels heard, supported, and cherished, as we all have a role to play in su***de prevention.

Reach out and listen to those around you.

Kids who have special needs or who have experienced trauma often have a rougher time in school than others.

This is true not just here in the United States but around the world - read about this study that found children in the United Kingdom who had a history of receiving social care or special education needs services were suspended and expelled at higher rates.

https://www.news-medical.net/news/20230727/Pupils-in-schools-are-much-more-likely-to-be-excluded-if-they-have-a-history-of-social-care.aspx

Pupils in state secondary schools in England are much more likely to be excluded if they have a history of receiving social care or special educational needs services, finds a new study by UCL researchers.

All children sometimes get stressed over changes in their routines, whether it’s a new pickup location, new classes, or just a school uniform.

In my fourth back-to-school tip, I recommend previewing as much of the upcoming school routine as possible with your child.

Walk them through as much of their upcoming school day as you can. Sometimes, even a change in clothing can be stressful.
