USCIS is applying long-standing law and prior court decisions to require certain aliens with temporary visas who decide they want to permanently reside in the U.S. to return to their home countries to apply for permanent visas through the U.S. Department of State.

We're returning to the original intent of the law to ensure aliens navigate our nation’s immigration system properly.

USCIS has proposed changes to Form AR-11 (Alien’s Change of Address Card), which many immigrants must file within 10 days of moving.
The revised form would request additional information, including:
• Employment
• School enrollment
• Public benefits/government assistance received
USCIS says the information would be used to help enforce immigration laws, including certain deportation provisions. The proposal is raising concerns that information about public benefits could be used in immigration enforcement and public charge-related reviews.
These are proposed changes only, and public comments are open until July 6, 2026. (Federal Register: 91 FR 24910, May 7, 2026

New USCIS Vetting Process May Result in a "Hold" On Many Adjudications

Earlier this week, USCIS offices across the U.S. notified applicants and attorneys that adjudications were subject to a possible hold, impacting the adjustment of status cases and asylum cases, but all USCIS adjudications may be affected.

The hold is due to a new security vetting process at the USCIS which began on April 27, 2026. The new process requires fingerprints to be resubmitted for all pending cases (possible exception: Naturalization applicants with scheduled oath ceremonies) for which fingerprints had already been submitted for FBI checks prior to April 27, 2026. Once these cases have completed the new vetting process, new cases will be submitted for fingerprint checks. It is not clear at this point how long this delay will last or how many applications will be impacted.
