I recently had the pleasure of speaking to students of the Thurgood Marshall Pre-Law Society at Binghamton University at their annual Civil Law Conference. The event included my speech, a panel discussion and a roundtable talk where the students got the opportunity to ask us lawyers any and all questions they wanted to about our journey in the legal profession. It was a wonderful experience pouring into young future lawyers about the importance of determination, focus, and resilience in traversing the legal profession, particularly as a minority.

Juneteenth, also known as “Freedom Day,” “Jubilee Day” or “Emancipation Day,” commemorates the abolition of slavery in America. While Juneteenth has been celebrated since the late 1800s, it was not until June 17, 2021, that President Joe Biden officially designated June 19 as a federal holiday commemorating the end of slavery in America.

On June 19, 1865, approximately two months following the defeat of the Confederate Army in the American Civil War, slaves in Texas were finally informed that the Confederacy had been defeated and they were now free. These were the last of the slaves to be notified of their freedom. The freedom of the last slaves on June 19, 1865, also came two and a half years following the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation in January of 1863. And while the Emancipation Proclamation freed slaves in the “rebellious states,” it was not until the the 13th Amendment was ratified in December of 1865 that slavery was officially abolished in all U.S. states and territories.
