Houston is home to one of the largest and fastest-growing Indian communities in the entire USA. And a significant number of NRIs here have been sitting on a citizenship application they're fully eligible for but haven't started.

5 years on a green card. 3 months of Texas residency. Physically present in the USA for 30 of the last 60 months. That's the checklist. If you tick all three, you can file your N-400 today.

Texas falls under the Consulate General of India in Houston. Your USCIS interview will be scheduled at the Houston field office. Filing fee is USD 760 (debit or credit card only). Total timeline from filing to oath runs 8 to 14 months in 2026.

Comment CITIZENSHIP or DM us, we handle the full documentation so your N-400 goes in right the first time.

One of the most common Indian passport renewal mistakes in the Bay Area is filing to the wrong consulate. ❌

If you live in California, Nevada, Arizona, Oregon, Washington, Hawaii or Alaska, your application goes to the Consulate General of India in San Francisco. Not New York. Not DC. Wrong consulate means automatic rejection with no refund on fees.

The renewal is fully mail-based 📲. Two portals - Passport Seva and the consular application portal. ICAO-compliant photos (35×45mm) are now mandatory. FedEx only for mailing. Standard processing is 4 to 6 weeks after receipt.

Apply 1 year prior to your passport expiration. Most airlines won't let you board with less than 6 months of validity.

Comment PASSPORT or DM us, we'll make sure your Bay Area renewal goes in right the first time.

If you recently renewed your US passport, there's one step most NRIs here miss entirely. 👇

Effective 📅 April 1, 2026, OCI holders are required to update their passport details on the OCI portal within 3 months of receiving a new passport. Miss that deadline and you're looking at a USD 25 late fee and potentially being flagged at Indian immigration on your next visit.

The update takes about 5 minutes at ociservices.gov.in. Upload your new passport details and a fresh photo. If you're a foreign spouse of an OCI holder, you also need to submit a new marriage declaration with every passport renewal.

Comment OCI or DM us, we'll make sure your OCI is current before your next India trip.

US documentation be like - fill this form, now get this notice, now resubmit, now wait 6 months, now your priority date moved, now pay this fee, now your photo is 1mm too big. 😪

And through all of it, the NRI just stands there. Takes the hit. Gets back up. Files again.

Because at the end of the day, we didn't move to America to give up over paperwork.

Documitra has your back. OCI, Indian Passport, Green Card, US Citizenship. ✅️

Chicago NRIs, if you're applying for an OCI card in 2026, the process has changed and there are a few things you need to get right before you walk into that appointment.

Illinois falls under the Consulate General of India, Chicago. Before you go, make sure you have everything on this checklist. Surrender Certificate if you previously held an Indian passport, current and old US passport, Indian passport copy, ICAO-compliant photo, proof of address, Naturalization Certificate if applicable, marriage certificate, and proof of your legal US status such as notarized Green Card, valid visa or EAD.

Missing even one of these at the counter means your application gets rejected on the spot. No exceptions. ❌

Comment Chicago or DM us, we'll make sure your documents are complete and correct before your appointment so you don't make a wasted trip.

Most people don’t lose time on their Green Card because of USCIS delays. They lose it because they wait.

For Indian nationals 🇮🇳, the Green Card backlog continues to grow, and your priority date depends on when you enter the system, not when you decide you’re “ready.” Delaying your filing means pushing your Green Card timeline further out, especially in categories already facing long wait times.

Whether it’s an employment-based Green Card, family-based petition, or adjustment of status, getting your documentation right and filing at the right time makes a real difference.

If you’re eligible, the smartest move is to understand your position and act early.

Living in New York or New Jersey with an Indian passport expiring soon? Here's the complete 2026 renewal guide, step by step. 👇

Your application goes to the Consulate General of India, New York, covering NY, NJ, CT, PA, OH and MA. Check your city first before you file anything. ✅

Start on the Passport Seva portal, fill your application and note your ARN. Then head to the VFS Global portal, link your ARN and pay fees. Both steps are mandatory, in that order.

For submission, choose in-person with a prior appointment at the VFS centre in New York or New Jersey. Or go mail-based using your own UPS, USPS or FedEx shipping label. Standard processing runs 4 to 6 weeks. Tatkal is 1 to 2 weeks.

You can apply up to 1 year before your passport expires, as long as there are no changes in your existing details.

Comment PASSPORT10 or DM us, we'll send you a $10 off coupon code on our services.

Just got your US citizenship? The India trip can wait but this process ❌️

India doesn't allow dual citizenship. Your Indian passport is cancelled the moment you naturalize. First thing to do is ✅️ to surrender it and get your Surrender Certificate. Without that, nothing else moves.

Then apply for your OCI card. It gives you lifetime visa-free entry to India with no renewals, ever. Processing takes 4 to 8 weeks.

Need to travel to India urgently before your OCI is ready? You can still apply for an Indian eVisa on your US passport - tourist, business, or emergency depending on your situation. Just don't travel on that cancelled Indian passport.

Once your OCI arrives, carry your US passport and OCI card together. That's it. No visa. No expiry. No stress.

We help with the complete journey, starting from citizenship. Comment OCI below or DM us.

A lot of visa issues don’t happen suddenly, they build up quietly.

An overlooked I-94 date, a small mismatch, or delaying a renewal by a few weeks can create complications that are much harder to fix later. And most people only realize this when it’s already urgent. ⌛

Staying compliant in the U.S. isn’t just about having a valid visa, it’s about tracking details, timelines, and updates consistently.

If you’re unsure about your current status or timelines, it’s better to check early than fix it later.

India's Ministry of Home Affairs notified the Citizenship Amendment Rules 2026 on April 30, shifting OCI applications to a digital-first model from 📅 May 1, 2026.

Every stage of the OCI lifecycle - new registration, reissue after passport renewal, transfer to a new passport, and voluntary renunciation, now moves to a dedicated online portal that issues an electronic OCI credential. Physical cards remain available on request but are no longer mandatory for travel and immigration clearance in India. 🇮🇳

New applicants will receive e-OCI on priority. Existing OCI card holders will get the electronic version in a phased manner, during reissue. Existing physical OCI cards remain valid.

One important note for NRIs travelling soon, until foreign airlines' staff get acclimatized with the changes, carry your physical OCI booklet alongside the e-OCI when travelling to India.

The government has also made it explicit that a minor child cannot hold an Indian passport and a foreign passport at the same time. If you have children with dual passport status, clarify this now.

Comment OCI or DM us, we'll help you understand what the e-OCI means for your specific situation.
