🤔Security Terms Made Simple🤔

1. CPTED (Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design):

✅ Fancy words for a simple idea: design spaces to make crime less likely.
Good lighting, trimmed bushes, clear walkways = safer spaces.

2. Situational Awareness:

✅ Paying attention to what’s happening around you.
Notice exits, people’s behavior, and potential risks, before something happens.

3. Protection in Depth:

✅ Think of it like layers of an onion.
Instead of relying on just one security measure, you stack them: cameras + access control + guards = stronger defense.

4. Sight Lines (or “Line of Sight”):

✅ The ability to clearly see across an area without blind spots.
Good sight lines = fewer hiding places for criminals.

5. Target Hardening:

✅ Making it harder for a criminal to succeed.
Examples: reinforced doors, stronger locks, shatterproof windows, security personnel.

6. Stand-off Distance:

✅ Simply, the safe space between a potential threat and the target.
Bollards in front of a building or barriers at an event keep vehicles from getting too close.

7. Dynamic Incident:

✅ A fast-moving, unpredictable event like an active shooter or ongoing attack.
It changes quickly and requires flexible, immediate responses.

8. Static Incident:

✅ A fixed or contained situation, like a suspicious package or barricaded suspect.
The scene is controlled, and responders can focus on managing it without things moving around constantly.

Physical Security Tips for Everyday Safety

1. Stay Aware of Surroundings:
Always scan your environment, whether walking, driving, or entering a building. Awareness is your first line of defense.

2. Trust Your Instincts:
If something feels “off,” don’t ignore it. Leave the area, call for help, or alert security if needed.

3. Secure Doors and Windows:
At home, work, or in your vehicle, lock entry points. Criminals often exploit unlocked doors.

4. Limit Distractions in Public:
Avoid being too focused on your phone or wearing headphones at high volume. These make you an easy target.

5. Park Smart:
Choose well-lit, populated areas. Always look around before exiting or approaching your vehicle.

6. Protect Personal Information:
Don’t overshare your location or daily routines on social media—it can make you vulnerable.

7. Have an Exit Strategy:
In public places like malls, theaters, or events, identify the nearest exits in case of emergencies.

8. Avoid Isolated Areas:
Stick to busy routes and avoid shortcuts through alleys, vacant lots, or poorly lit areas.

9. Carry a Safety Tool:
A whistle, flashlight, or approved self-defense tool can provide security and help draw attention in emergencies.

10. Report Suspicious Activity:
If you see unusual behavior, vehicles, or packages, notify security or local authorities right away.

Protection in Depth:

When developing a safety strategy, never rely on one single measure, true protection comes from integrating layers of protection that work together, physical security, technology/cybersecurity, people, policies/procedures, and resilence.
